What do you like/don't like about fandoms?

Posted

Note: Keep in mind that these are all opinions, not facts. OPINIONS. NOT FACTS. Don't go around bashing someone for something that you don't agree on

Well there's always that fandom that you absolutely adore, and that fandom you absolutely hate.

What do you like or dislike about fandoms?

What do I like:

- Cool fan arts

You know, those fan arts that actually would look awesome for an anime.

- Real shippings

Yeah, I know that people like to imagine other shippings, but for me personally I prefer shippings that are most likely to happen, with solid evidences.

- Funny Videos

Not those G Mod, MMD or whatever that is. Videos that actually have original funny content on their own.

- Those short one-liner videos

Want an example?

http://youtu.be/VuogEwWS8O8

Kinda vague, but that's something I like.

- Cosplays

I don't mind even if it's a guy doing a girl's costume, or a kid doing an old man's costume, it's your favourite character? Good. You want to cosplay as that character? Go ahead!

What I don't like:

- OC (Original Characters)

I just don't like them really. Most of what I see are cheesy rip offs of other characters, with unoriginal backstories. Which leads to another thing

- Impossible Shippings

Dear God, I hate these. You know, those moments where they seem to share a shipping moment, and everyone goes like "OTP, OTP"

- The Horny Fanbase

There's always something like this on a fanbase. I just can't take it -.-

- Stubborn fans

Those fans that only accept what they think, and that everything else is false.. Uuuurgh -.-

Above is my personal opinion, don't go around bashing it please .-.

I don't like anything about fandoms just because Sturgeon's law is kicked into overdrive.

I think OCs can be hit or miss. There can be good ones, but there are also a ton that are pretty much just a clone of someone else. :

Like:

Good fanart, like you said.

Getting to meet the sane fans who are really fun to talk to.

And those funny videos

What I don't like:

The people who try to divide a fanbase and act superior towards other fans for whatever reason (The Naruto fanbase is horrible with this...)

Disgusting fanart

Crazed Shippers

I agree with everything you and Yellow Flash said about the pros and cons of a fandom, but here is my 2cents

What irks me the most is stubbornness like you guys pointed, I dislike it when they refuse to knowledge the flaws of what they like. It's not horrible by a long shot, but when they try to shove it down your throat and tell you "This is how it post to be, and forget everyone's opinion or facts" it irks me to no end. I'm a positive person and I like to think positive about the shows I like, but I'm not going to sit here and tell you "WELL YOUR TOTALLY WRONG THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED IN EPISODE, *insert the rest of the fandom rage here*". Like don't get me wrong it's ok if you support and love your favorite show, but don't shove it down our throats please.

Disgusting fanart is pretty bad it's kinda the main reason why I stopped following the Attack on Titan fandom on tumblr, because you would just see things beyond yaoi that my mind cannot even begin to imagine.

i hate that their own character becomes like, the main character of the story

but i also like them because they have really cool and crazy ideas :D

Pros:  Good fan art.  I don't really get involved enough to see others.  I like some AMVs though I guess.

Cons:

I dislike fans who feel the need to either bash or lecture you cause you pointed out a flaw or something you don't like about it.  Something can still be good even if it has flaws, nothing in this world is perfect, I don't think there's a need for people to get so pissy about it.  I love Kingdom Hearts and recognize that the controls in KH1 were awkward, COM's strategic card system typically turns into card mashing to do something before you get hit, entire plot of days could have never happened at all, the characters traits in BBS can be annoying (Aqua and her "Light only, light only" bitching) and DDD was slow paced until the very end then rushed and crammed.  I still like the series and can recognize that it's not perfect but I don't get my panties in a twist over it.

I dislike it when people make incestuous couples.  I'm fine with it long as it was portrayed that way in the show, like I'm fine with Yori and Iku pairing from Boku wa Imoto ni Koi o Suru, or the Hitachiin twins from Host Club for example, but I just find it really twisted when they take relationships that are purely shown as innocent family love and twist it into something sexual, like Elsanna or Blair and her Mom from Gossip girl.  It makes me question the mentality that they looked at non-sexual relatives that have no hint of romance and went "Nope! I WANT THEM TO GET IT ON.  LOOKING OUT FOR YOUR SISTER MEANS YOU WANT TO BANG HER"

I generally tend to stay away from fandoms as well 'cause while I may like something, I don't get overly obsessed with it, I don't fill my room with memorabilia, spend ages reading fanfics, waifu(?)s or anything, and there tends to be a lot of obsessed fangirls/boys who would say you're not a true fan for doing so and I couldn't be annoyed having to defend my liking of something.

Additionally, I had to unfollow the Once Upon a Time fandom on Tumbler because Channel 5 (UK broadcaster) dropped the series and no one has picked it up thus far.  I don't want to watch on a pc and was hoping someone would considering OUATIW also came out at the same time and both looked amazing, but alas, no season 3 for me at all.  So the fandom kept posting a load of spoilers since it was already aired in America and I don't want to ruin it for myself, takes the fun out of it a lot when you know the plot going in.

I hate the word "fandom" itself. I just like things and talk to other people who like said things. I don't ever spaz out about it.

Ugh, I agree. I like to be optimistic about the series I like, too. I acknowledge that they're not perfect, but I'd much rather look at the stuff I like than the bad stuff. I also think it's annoying when people only ever talk about "Oh this sucks about this" then follow up with "But I like it still." If you like it so much, why not talk about the good parts?

The only thing I can think of right now is when people bash others for who/what they ship and which character they do or don't like. And bashing them for their opinion of the said.

I really despise it about fandoms when they try to stamp and insult others with shippings.

Pros:

Getting to meet new people due to a common interest- This is especially the case for me with fandoms like Harry Potter & KH, which are some of my main ones. Though I love meeting new people in RL I've got anxiety, and this has made it hard for me to make friends in school or at work in the past. As a tween my anxiety was especially bad, so the only way I felt comfortable talking to others was the internet. I've met some of my best friends due to online communities that center around a movie franchise/TV show/etc, so I really owe fandoms for that.

Fanart/Fanfic- Though I'm really picky about both, it's amazing to me that people can be so artistic through fan art and fanfic. I'll admit when I was first introduced to it I thought it was unoriginal and pointless, but I was so wrong. It's wonderful. It enables people to express themselves and since it's based on another work you've already got an entire audience to give you feedback to improve your skills.

Metas/Theories- Oh my god. This. Probably my favorite part about it, honestly. This can't really be done so much with fandoms whose story/show/movie have run their course (but it still happens, just not as often because they're usually metas). Theories are really fun to write and read, and while theres not a lot of fandoms that have got plots that allow the fans to make good guesses of whats to come, the ones that do are a blast. Some people go the whole nine yards and just write a theory from scratch, and then some bounce ideas off each other to make a monster theory. Surprisingly, it doesn't even matter if it's right or not-- the only thing that really matters is if has/had the potential of happening. And of course, the fun that went into it. Metas are really enjoyable as well. Analyzing plots/characters/symbolism to make sense of things is an eye opener to the intentions of why writers do the things they do. Some of this sounds boring-- but between TV show hiatuses, it really kills the time.

Cons:

Ship wars- We all know ships are due to preference, but if you think about it, that preference has a lot to do with what you want or have experienced yourself. So insulting a ship is not only dumb because you're just causing an unnecessary riot, but because shippers often ship what they do based on what they want for themselves. It's really easy for it to get personal. There was this fandom I was in that had them a lot. Ship 1 was about a chick and her old baby daddy. He left her, ruined her life-- came back a decade later, and started trying to make a family with her. Ship 2 was about the same chick with this other guy. The other guy had a really bad past, did some terrible things, but the chick inspired him to be a better person and he ended up admiring her and falling in love with her. There were a million and one wars that went down. The fact was, most people that shipped Ship 1 were people who had a fall out in a relationship and still wanted it to work (or ended up making it work) and people in Ship 2 were people who wanted to inspire others. Whatever. But it's interesting to note the reasons behind it. And it just goes to prove you REALLY DON'T have a right to tell people what to like or to judge them for what they do.

People who have their heads so far up their ass that they refuse to acknowledge that YES, their favorite villain/character really screwed up. And NO, their redemption arc won't be easy. And NO, just because you like them and they had a "terrible childhood" doesn't excuse all the people they wronged/killed/robbed/whatever. YES, they have the potential to be a good guy. NO, they're aren't one yet and they won't for a while.- Self explanatory. It happens too often. And it's especially annoying when they want to shove it up in front of everyone's face.

Those rude people that believe their opinions have been approved by celestial beings and think they're 100% in the right. And likewise refuse to accept other opinions.

People who can't have a good argument, when they asked for one.

People who don't tag their spoilers or don't make it clear that they're a blog/site that doesn't tag them.

And when "fandom" starts to turn into "fandumb".

Speaking about KH's one I just don't like the fanmade pornography. I kinda disturbs me to see kids doing certain things. Or to see Mickey Mouse doing certain things...But I've to say something about the Doctor Who fandom, that I think is the worst on Earth (and universe and history).I don't know if it's the only one, but it destroyed the tv series. Since Moffat discovered that repeating the same words made the fans happy (for example "Bad Wolf", "Girl who waited", "Impossible girl", "Impossible astronaut"), this evil guy started to fill the episodes with those meaningless phrases. The last three season have no sense, full of paradoxes, but the fans love them. Why? Why do they support all this? They ruined the wheeping angels and everything good the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th new seasons gave to the series... I just don't know what to think about.I don't like Moffat and I don't like the DW fandom because they ruined a show I used to love.

What I don't like - the people who post drawings of naked people.  If I wanted to look at that, I wouldn't be on Tumblr.

No matter what the fandom there are going to be the loud minority that have a really bad attitude.  Usually when I see them I turn around and go the other way (figuratively speaking).

But so many of you are dissing the shipping!.  It so happens that the only ship I ship is shipping.  I love crack ships.  The crazier the better.  I think shipping is hilarious and the fact people take it so serious makes me laugh even more.  Perhaps it's just because I don't take shipping seriously at all that I can laugh at it.

What I like: People sharing a similar interest getting to meet and discuss what they love.

What I dislike: People generally being people and firetrucking something good up

I also hate when fandoms get "popular". For example, I like attack on titan (only read the manga tho) but I'm not apart of the "fandom". Idk just...eh.

I like Fandoms but. As long as Rule 34 exists and is in play, it will ruin them slightly.

Overall I like fandoms and there's not much that bother me about them, but there's one thing that I HATE. Shipping wars.
