I really don't get some of the stuff with Frozen. Like how everyone was saying to Anna "you just met him and you'll get married"? 

 

Erm, what about all the previous movies? It's not like they got married immediately yeah but almost all fall in love very quickly.

I think those are tackling those Cinderella fantasies girls have (meet the prince) since it was last minute and he fell in love in a dance.

I think a better example would be Merida (Brave). The whole point of the story was that she didn't want to get married, stick with being a tomboy instead of princess-y, and wound up firetrucking up her ties with her mom.

Which is weird since it's the same exact company that made both. Besides, what's wrong with having that fantasy? It is a fantasy after all and they will realize this ain't possbile when they grow up.

It's when they try to put message like these that bothers me. I mean, they make it so annoying when every damn character in the movie mentions it.

 

Imagine if it was a movie where they were telling the girl that just because she is a girl she can't do anything. Did anyone tell that to Mulan? Nope, she did it all by herself, the movie was going with the flow.

I feel a lot of people who say this are the types of people who haven't watched a Disney movie since they were 9, but because Frozen was so hype they did and that's all that's in their memory.  

Frozen IS the first Disney movie to aggravate me with how catchy their songs are.

Cinderella was dependent. Cinderella needed the prince in order to get away from her bitchy ass step sisters and step mother. "A dream your heart makes" was her wishing to live happily and away from the people in her household. The prince made it happen.

Mulan is not comparable to Elsa. Both of the stories are not even remotely similar. The only similarity was that they are Disney princesses. I don't get why compare them at all.

The whole point of Frozen wasn't to save the nation from the battle of some outside force, it was to renew the relationship between two sisters.

 

I don't think you get why Elsa is independent. You are comparing two characters who are very different.

Elsa is trying to accept herself for who she is and she didn't get a man at the end, that is why people call her independent.

Mulan is considered independent because she saved an entire nation by herself.

Merida accepted herself for who she is and didn't get a man at the end.

 

That's why Merida is the best example for being the same kind of interdependency as Elsa. Mulan has zero comparison value.

 

I have a feeling this has a lot more to do with your hatred for Frozen than Mulan.

It wasn't never bad to have past tropes come to light in new movies anyways.

Uhh, yeah they did, she was supposed to be executed for being a woman in the army, remember? Shang spared her life because she saved his. The whole first half of the movie was "Women should just shut up, look pretty and do as they're told". Just saying, it's not like there wasn't anyone standing in her way, the whole culture was. The fact that she put her life in danger by defying her country's sexist policies to protect her aging father is the point.

I don't really think that little children watching these movies can grasp all that. 

Frozen wasn't a bad movie at all, but it was certainly overhyped. There have been movies with similar premises that were better, undoubtfully.

That's the meaning of the story though. They do get it. Little girls get that life isn't about being pretty or pristine, its more than that. It teaches little boys that all girls weren't brought up to be dolls either, there are strong women who can do stuff that a man can and be amazing at it.

I swear, the overhype for Frozen and the people calling Frozen stuff that it's not are worse than the movie itself. :dry:
