Kingdom Hearts III is now using Unreal Engine 4

Sora96

In an interview with Famitsu Weekly the director of the Kingdom Hearts series, Tetsuya Nomura has revealed Kingdom Hearts III is now being developed with Unreal Engine 4 rather than Square Enix's very own Luminous Engine. Nomura explains he changed the engine "for a variety of reasons". We'll have a full translation of this interview later, for now you can read this part of the interview in full below thanks to goldpanner. Thanks go to @aibo_ac7 for the tip.

---Once more, may we ask about the state of development on KH3?

Nomura: It’s moving steadily along the estimated schedule. As an effect of us changing the game engine to Unreal Engine 4, which we did for several reasons, we had a lot of problems with the image creation, but we have been able to progress without incident with the collaboration of Epic Games.

I'll be hoping for the best, but yeah, the graphics will be pretty insane at the least. Just imagine how intense the game's finale will look because of it?

I think they switched to UE4 because its probably easier to develop for and will be quicker than using the Luminous engine. It would have been nice to keep everything inhouse, but i guess decisions like this have to be made sometimes.

There we go again.

first they said the engine is most important and now they change it.

Next they postpone development because of DDD HD.

Then they will return back to PS2 graphics and then they'll cut KHIII.

KHIII, the next FFXV

I guess theres that too... But still, they could've atleast used one of their old engines. The Crystal engine isn't that old, I think... They used it for FFXIII didn't they?

It's just that, they have their own stuff yet they use an engine that half the industry uses...

No. They're done with Crystal Tools. There was so many issues with that engine. And it's only built for PS3 and 360. Not PS4 and Xbox One.

This should be good news. Clearly this engine tested as a preferable choice that they decided was most likely to pay off.

Hmm.. It may end up looking similar to this.

It's also being made on UE4.

That's Cel Shaded. From the looks of things so far, KH3 is gonna be quite different from that.

I just don't get it, why are they always facing such problems although it easily be fixed when it comes to FF games. I just hope that the graphics deserve to have such game on the PS4 not for PS3...

Think of each major project as unique. They actually bring their own technical challenges to overcome, even if it seems bizarre that they're present to begin with.

Not really, I can see them porting DDD HD using UE4 graphics. Like Type0 HD was suppose to get with Luminous but you know Lol

That's good news since Luminous Engine was slowing down the process. Hope they know how to work properly with Unreal Engine 4. The graphics will be amazing! Just hoping that Osaka's Team knows how to fix glitches

Yeah but what's next.

If they can't do that either, will they use minecraft xPP ??

I mean, come on, if the current team can't do it, hire professionals.

square's own engine dev team must be falling behind if the issues with luminous were bad enough that they needed to switch. Though i really have to wonder what exactly was going wrong.

Ah well, hopefully UE4 is flexible enough for them. And maybe it will lead to a PC port.....yeah I know, getting my hopes up too much but still.

As an independent game developer, I too, am very fond of the Unreal Engine. Can't wait to see what they make of this!
