Willa Holland's Voice Acting in the Trailer

Posted

While I think the new trailer is definitely awesome, and I am looking forward to 0.2 the most, I was a bit disappointed in Willa Holland's voice acting. While her voice definitely fits the character, her delivery of some lines lacked the necessary emotion fitting the situation. Particularly in the scene where Aqua is confronting the mirror. The "Shadow Aqua" in the trailer doesn't sound threatening or demeaning. It almost sounds like she's literally reading lines off the paper. Aqua's response is worse. She doesn't speak with conviction, or with anger at the shadow's accusation. If Willa used a fraction of the energy Foreteller Aced used when he yells "WE DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO THE TRAITOR IS YET!!" she would have nailed it. Incidentally, that's the best line ever.

I wonder if you guys' agree at all. Also, do you think they'll replace/fix some of the dialogue similar to this before the January release?

I have a different point of view. I thought her mirror self sounded pretty menacing and her response was solid and convicted.

just that classic Aqua line delivery.

unfortunately

i mean idk maybe the Realm of Darkness is just so boring that Aqua can't be bothered to emote properly

xD Maybe! I know Willa Holland has the capability to voice act really well, she just needs to put the effort in. Some of her lines in the original BBS were really great (not all of them). I figured at the time that it was essentially her first time voice acting so it didn't bother me too much. But here it just sounds awful. I do think she sounded better in the E3 trailer though, so maybe it was just a bad day?

I completely agree with the mirror scene. While her illusion self sounded menacing, her response felt too quiet and soft, almost as if she had a sore throat and didn't want to speak up. Other than that, I don't think it was that bad.

I think it'l sound fine when we play the game.  We don't really know much about the context of her lines.  For all we know, there could be 4 or 5 lines in between the 2 lines we saw from Aqua and The Mirror Shadow which could help her tone make more sense.  I don't think its really too much to worry about right now,

My opinion tho, it sounded amazing

I agree with everything you said.  Although, I've never liked Willa's Aqua voice acting to begin with

I could barely understand what her mirror version was saying thanks to some terrible voice modulation, so thankfully there will be subtitles for that.

Her normal voice acting was fine, though.

My opinion towards her voiceover at the mirror scene. It gave me chills. Like the reflection is teasing her, putting Aqua down, just saying a bunch of junk. And Aqua to the reflection, it's like she just went out and tell her that she's strong, but there was fear in her voice as she said it. Like the whole stay in the Realm of Darkness, is draining her of her positive side and plant seeds of doubt in her.

Holland's always been hit or miss. Even her lines when she saw Terra in that demo were hit and miss. But honestly, I'd rather her return than get replaced. I like her voice too much for the character.

Honestly, I don't see what's wrong with Willa's voice!  I've always loved her as Aqua, and I thought that her Mirror Shadow sounded grim and haunting, and her response to the shadow was defiant and challenging!  I don't know why people still don't like Willa Holland as Aqua! In fact, I say that her voice acting has gotten even better! :D

Like, seriously, her voice sounds perfectly fine to me. O_O But anywho, that's my opinion. :)

Am I the only one who thinks Willa's voice is great in this? Much better than her BbS dialogue delivery. It was WAY better.  Also...more so off-topic, did anyone notice that the characters' mouths now line up to the English dialogue? In all the past games, I believe their mouths would line up to the Japanese dialogue with English over it.

I do agree with this. I would hate for her to be replaced and her voice is the voice for the character. Like some other people said maybe I'm missing some context or am misinterpreting the scene and if so, that's definitely preferable to just bad sounding lines. But I also have to say, in most scenes in movies, games, etc. you should be able to recognize the emotion the character is feeling in the scene by interpreting their body language, facial expression and voice. I just don't think her tone lined up with her expression and stance.

I haven't watched the Japanese trailer yet but for comparison purposes I probably will.

The only time Holland felt like Aqua was in the Final Mix extra stuff. It gave me hope she got better. But, this was....like....a step backwards to where she was again. She's not emoting enough and she's speaking way too close to the mic, too. Her mic peaked, too.

kh1 and kh2 had different lip syncing, at least in cgi scenes. Chain of memories and Days it was obvious that the lip syncing was jpn though

Actually I think her voice acting is way better then in Birth By Sleep. Never liked Willa's voice in BBS. She's still hot though.

I really love Aqua's voice and I feel that it fits her character, but I do agree, in some scenes I feel like she could put more emotion into her lines at some points.

That's one the problems of dubbing, you have limits in terms of vocal range and speed.
