Well, Xehanort is very aware of the world of fiction and the path to it. And sometimes Sora is very predictable lol

Xehanort probably knew Sora would do anything to bring Kairi back, and from KHMoM it seems he wanted Sora to be trapped in unreality, so he set that trap.
