Is it just me, or is Final Fantasy IX greatly underrated?

Featured Replies

I think that FF9 is an AWESOME game! I love it! It's actually the very first FF game I ever got.

FFIX is incredible. I personally think it's better than VII /shot

When it comes to the final fantasy games, it' always FF7 this, and FF13 that. But what about Final Fantasy IX? I believe that FF9 is an incredible game  with incredible characters, and is much better than FF7 (that's right, I really did just say that). In other words, I think the game is much better than its lack of popularity would suggest. What do you think?

I like you man, you and I seem to agree on everything....

Same here. Well, I actually got Crisis Core first.... damnit.

Yeah, I'd say IX is the best FF game, but Crisis Core is damn close in second!

FFIX is a jewel. Good story, soundtrack for gods... (Dark Messenger, EstoGarza and The Skies of Alexandria... :D) best character development... xD...

Yes, it is.

Arc the Lad is another underrated game!!!

It's a great RPG =/

It's one of my favorite FF's, second only to 6.

IX is a really underrated game. Not too many people were turned on to it because of the new art style, so it went unnoticed by many except for the die-hard fans. It really is a spectacular game and is one of my favorites in the franchise.

I don't think IX is as underrated as people think.  Maybe when you compare it to VII, but as an FF title, it gets plenty of attention.  The VII fanboys just tend to be more vocal so it can be hard to tell that IX is plenty popular.

I loved this game above the rest, to be honest,

I have FF9 on my ps3 I've always wanted to play it but never got around to it, I might have to now after reading everyone's comments. :)

For me it goes:

1. FF8

2. FF10

3. FF7

4. FF13

5. FF12

IX is the best, in my opinion, for many reasons. First of all, all the characters are amazing and likable. The story is great, and contrary to what outsiders would guess, it's one of the darkest FF stories. It has great parallels to Cain and Abel, etc. Kuja accomplished so much, and Zidane and Garnet are my favorite FF couple. Their love was real, beautiful, and didn't detract from the story, but rather added to it. Garnet is one of the strongest, best female characters I've ever seen. She grew so much, and even in her "damsel in distress" moments, I still felt she was a force to be reckoned with. She was strong-willed and capable, and she didn't need a sword to be powerful.

FFIX is absolutely beautiful. It is a depiction of life itself, and brings real questions to the table. Like: just because you're a thief, does that mean you're evil? It's these reasons that have made IX my favorite, and why I'll always cherish it. Plus, Zidane is a total badass. Just listen to what TV tropes said about him. "Finding
out that he's an alien? Meh. Reveal that he was supposed to be Kuja's nastier successor? Annoying, but he'll still cite the Power of Friendship before charging the apparent Big Bad. Having his soul ripped out by said Big Bad to make him more pliable? He'll wangst out his nose, stagger around like a drunk, push away his friends... and still go after the guy who was responsible for everything."
Seriously. Zidane is amazing. And you don't need a reason to help people. LOL.

FFIX is amazing. It teaches you great life lessons, has awesome side characters with back stories, beautiful secondary pairings, fantastic music, etc. And the "You're Not Alone" segment. That part... If only KH could have a scene as epic as that in KHIII, or something.

And I love the parallels! Like just listen to what Zidane says here: "What do you think his father did when he came home? ...The father raised his fist and beat the son he had worked so hard to raise... But you know what surprised him even more? The father smiled, after beating up his son! Can you believe that? He just gave his son a beating. But this was what the man thought when he saw his father smiling...'This is my home. This is the place I call home.'" And you know that's exactly what Zidane's thinking when he's embracing Dagger at the end (and she's pounding on his chest). Just... so many feelings. So many!

IX is truly a spectacular game, and I truly hope we'll see it in KH--or a remake of it--someday... And this

amazing video here pretty much sums up all my feelings on IX, and just what it is. I only hope I can carry on the lessons that game and Zidane taught me for all of my life. That would be more than enough in thanks for this moving game.

Final Fantasy IX was my second favorite FF game, and one of my favorite games of all time.

You cant blame the fans considering FF7 is the best selling FF game.

I think that IX and XII are really underrated. i loved both games alot

THIS!

Final Fantasy IX and Final Fantasy VIII are both pretty sadly underated. Both are amazing games and JRPGs.

They're both better than Final Fantasy VII.

I didn't even like VII that much ._.

I actually just bought IX yesterday, kinda ironic timing. xD I've still got to download it, which I plan on doing after school today. It sounds like a great game, I can't wait to play it! :D

By the way, this really isn't the place, but nice avatar. :D To make this quote more relevant... Crisis Core's great, also! I don't think it's possible to hate Zack...

 Zack the puppy? NEVER! :P

And cheers man, I needed a change... I WENT ZETTA!

It's not too popular, but it's one of my favorite Final Fantasys. From gameplay to characters to storyline, everything was just incredible. It was different from the two more scientific Final Fantasys before it, so I think that's why it wasn't received as well and was considered below VII and VIII. I'm a big fan of VII as well, but for different reasons than I love IX. They're so different I can hardly compare them. But I'll say this: IX made me cry. VII didn't. So yeah, I love IX a lot. (:

Whilst I COMPLETELY agree with you, bare this in mind - there are many epic scenes in VII that even those who haven't played the game can relate to - this is something IX does lack.

Sorry, but I still like VII and VIII better. I find anti-heroes to be cooler heroes, and while technically Zidane is an anti-hero, I just see Cloud's and Squall's evolution as characters just as good, if not better. I think while Garnet is a strong character, she got that heavily from Aerith, Terra, Tifa and Quistis. And even further back, Faris. It's not like she's the first. Plus, I think Sephiroth's a cooler villain and has a much better reason for being that way. I also found the optional, cool stuff as well as the music to be a bit better in VII and VIII. While IX was a great game  I think VII and VIII were a tough act to follow and IX didn't accomplish it.

I love and adore IX. It has among the best character work in the series (though I think XII just edges it out by ways of complicated characters), the art style is great, and I think the gameplay was solid. The kicker for me, though, is just the level of emotional scenes that are present in the story. There's so much great drama and atmosphere all around, and the characters are so well developed, that when things start to go down, you feel genuine empathy for the characters. I don't think I've ever felt that much emotion for fictional characters in any other game.

Another aspect that I admire is how it seems to be the first FF game that deals with mortality. Not just the act of dying (obviously, other games have had that), but of the fear of dying. Most other times, when a hero or main character goes down, they get to be relatively brave about it, and although the audience is sad, the character seems to have closure. In IX, all the characters seem to have a hard time coming to grips with their time on this earth, and what they are going to do with it. Especially Vivi and Kuja, which is a character relationship that I love to tiny bits. Kuja can lord over Vivi in nearly every way and form, but when it comes to the concept of death, although Vivi is afraid of it, he's able to come to grips with it, while Kuja simply cannot fathom the prospect of not existing, thus leaving Vivi the one being empowered at the end of all things.

Love this game

And don't forget all of the great songs in the game such as this

and this

Sure, the soundtrack may not be as good as the KH games or maybe even FFVII, but it still holds a special place in my heart.

Absolutely. The music in the game was stunning at the right moments. The music for Necron is seriously my favorite boss music in all the FF series. And Melodies of Life, of course. (: Good songs.
