People think Frozen is the first Disney movie with independent females eh?

Recommended Posts

I really don't get some of the stuff with Frozen. Like how everyone was saying to Anna "you just met him and you'll get married"?

Erm, what about all the previous movies? It's not like they got married immediately yeah but almost all fall in love very quickly.

I think those are tackling those Cinderella fantasies girls have (meet the prince) since it was last minute and he fell in love in a dance.

That's why Hans is a prince.

Which is weird since it's the same exact company that made both. Besides, what's wrong with having that fantasy? It is a fantasy after all and they will realize this ain't possbile when they grow up.

It's when they try to put message like these that bothers me. I mean, they make it so annoying when every damn character in the movie mentions it.

Imagine if it was a movie where they were telling the girl that just because she is a girl she can't do anything. Did anyone tell that to Mulan? Nope, she did it all by herself, the movie was going with the flow.

@OP

I think a better example would be Merida (Brave). The whole point of the story was that she didn't want to get married, stick with being a tomboy instead of princess-y, and wound up firetrucking up her ties with her mom.

Mulan is still a great example regardless.Mulan went extremely out of her way to save her dad from getting killed in war by joining the army where not only she was a huge contribution to said army but she saved ALL OF firetruckING CHINA on her own.

While it's not my most hated Disney film (Home on the Range takes that title), I'm tired of seeing it everywhere. People think it's the greatest Disney film since The Lion King and I don't even think it's Disney's best film of the past 5 years. I'd say let people like it, but when they start shoving it in your face saying how great it is then that's when you need to be like, "yo chill"*

*no pun intended

Buddy I'm fine with people liking it but it got shoved into my face so much it was unbearable and this christmas was the last straw for me where every ....single....one I asked for Christmas specials or christmas movies recommendations all of them literally said Frozen......THAT MOVIE DOESN'T EVEN TAKE PLACE DURING CHRISTMAS TIME

I wonder if that's the case for Australia...

A lot of kids look up to Disney films and their characters. Elsa, the independent woman who strives to be true to herself and wound up living happily ever after from doing so and Anna who almost fell in love with a terrible person and finally found true love.

It lets girls think twice about the guy they like and also try to be themselves.

Disney movies have always been about a message. I don't think there was anything bad about it.

It is. Its just as popular as the Lion King (maybe even more) and its doing perfectly well financially.

Lion King was shoved in peoples faces a lot, Frozen is the same. Its really not that bad. I see it can get annoying tho.

She got the man at the end. If we are comparing Elsa, the girl without the man who is considered independent, but best example would be Merida.

Well Mulan got the man because she worked her ass off and saved an entire country so why wouldn't the man fall in love with her? What did Elsa firetrucking do aside from her relationship with her sister?Sing let it go?

Getting a man doesn't mean you're dependent,it's relying too much on the man.Mulan didn't rely on the Captain who btw stopped trusting her the moment he knew she's a woman in disguise and in the end she worked on her own to save China

It won't hurt you to rewatch Mulan and refresh some old memories. At least that's a better use of time than hearing "Let it Go" for the 394758394794723937392739217392730928302830283028301283028340284025th time

Also I fail to see how Cinderella was dependent on the prince. Or any other of the princesses for that matter.

Anyway, this is the kinda topic (I'm sure plenty of people know what I'm talking about) that I don't want to get in. Atleast not here.

Cinderella was dependent. Cinderella needed the prince in order to get away from her bitchy ass step sisters and step mother. "A dream your heart makes" was her wishing to live happily and away from the people in her household. The prince made it happen.

Mulan is not comparable to Elsa. Both of the stories are not even remotely similar. The only similarity was that they are Disney princesses. I don't get why compare them at all.

The whole point of Frozen wasn't to save the nation from the battle of some outside force, it was to renew the relationship between two sisters.

I don't think you get why Elsa is independent. You are comparing two characters who are very different.

Elsa is trying to accept herself for who she is and she didn't get a man at the end, that is why people call her independent.

Mulan is considered independent because she saved an entire nation by herself.

Merida accepted herself for who she is and didn't get a man at the end.

That's why Merida is the best example for being the same kind of interdependency as Elsa. Mulan has zero comparison value.

I have a feeling this has a lot more to do with your hatred for Frozen than Mulan.

It wasn't never bad to have past tropes come to light in new movies anyways.

Uhh, yeah they did, she was supposed to be executed for being a woman in the army, remember? Shang spared her life because she saved his. The whole first half of the movie was "Women should just shut up, look pretty and do as they're told". Just saying, it's not like there wasn't anyone standing in her way, the whole culture was. The fact that she put her life in danger by defying her country's sexist policies to protect her aging father is the point.

I don't really think that little children watching these movies can grasp all that.

That's the meaning of the story though. They do get it. Little girls get that life isn't about being pretty or pristine, its more than that. It teaches little boys that all girls weren't brought up to be dolls either, there are strong women who can do stuff that a man can and be amazing at it.
