Is it a failure? Although the Wii U have been sold at lot due to Smash Bros and Mario Kart 8. But there's no denying that the Wii U still have bad sales. Plus, Nintendo is making a new console that will soon make the Wii U useless to get. (Just like what happened to 3DS due to the New 3DS.)

And the lack of virtual console, indies and original Wii U download only games makes Eshop sorta useless. So, tell me in not a fanboy or Nintendrone way. Is the Wii U a failure?

Yes, Wii U is a failure due to many reasons. Nevertheless it has excellent games.

The Wii U has been failing miserably since launch, I love it, but its one of nintendos biggest commercial failures

It's not doing well in terms of sales, but it has a lot of great games. I personally couldn't care less how others view it, I still think it's a fantastic system.

Also, it has a lot of indie support. Not sure what you mean by saying it lacks that. The Virtual Console service on the Wii U is also far better than the 3DS Virtual Console service. It could be much better on the Wii U, but it's still decent.

As for the NX, of course Nintendo's making a new system. I bet Sony's beginning to work on planning the PS5, and Microsoft's working on the next Xbox. Just because the NX is in the works doesn't mean it'll be released next year. The Wii U will still be around for a while. It's got a ton of big games coming this year, as well as next year.

ThisReally who gives a flying firetruck if our console of choice isn't selling the best?I love the Dreamcast,GameCube and Wii U a lot and I spent hundreds of hours on My GameCube and Wii U and still playing them to this daySales only matter when it comes to gaming discussions but as the value of the console itself,I had a lot of great memories with my Wii U and I'll continue to do so even when I get the NXSpeaking of Indie support, that's almost what the Wii U does bestShovel KnightShantae & The Pirate's CurseFreedom Planet.Guacamelee and many other great indie gems

And plenty of others that are coming soon. Nintendo might not be getting much support from third parties, but it has plenty of high quality indie games.

Yeah i completely agree with you Shulk. It has a lot of great games, heck right now it has the best gaming library out of all 3 consoles so far. And it's continuing to have great games like Yoshi's Wolly World, the new Mario Tennis game, Xenoblade Chronicles X, and Star Fox Zero.. Sure it is not doing so well in terms of sells (though I'll admit that's Nintendo's fault for not doing such a good job at explaining the difference between the Wii and wii U) but it still has a solid library. Besides, Nintendo recently stated that they will continue to support the Wii U even after the NX is released.

This.

The only thing going for it is a few games, mainly 1st party, which isn't exactly a good thing in the life-span of a console.

I've personally never had enough interest in buying a Wii U. Probably not enough games I'd want to get.

And y'know, with all the BS going on with DLC,microtransaction and stuff with third-parties,indies are all I need for now........well the good ones of course

At least the Wii U does not have glitchy third party games.

Great Indie games and amazing first-party games. The two main reasons why I'm happy with my Wii U.

Yup, its a flop. Slowest selling Nintendo console ever, that's why Nintendo's abandoning it. As people have said, it has a quite a few great games, but of those games, few have broken a million sales. And yes, sales are important. One pf my favourite games of all time is Little King's Story. It didn't sell well, the company that made it went out of business, and they never got to make Super Little King's Story like they wanted to, as a result

Sales are important. For one, you should want games you enjoy to sell well since otherwise you might not get games like it as much in the future. But besides that, nobody wants to buy a console that's a sinking ship, because that means you're going to be able to find it for significantly cheaper down the line. I bought my Wii U full price last year, and I enjoyed it a lot, but I wouldn't say I'm not disappointed that Nintnedo is ditching it for a new system so soon. Part of the reason I got a Wii U was for potential future games, but now it's looking like Zelda U might be the last big game it gets.

Also, as I stated above, a game not selling well can be pretty fatal. Not to a big company like Nintendo, but  their subsidiaries, 3rd parties, and so on

It's great and all that you have good memories. I do to, but the console is still being sold, so it's a value proposition to many potential customers, even if it's not to people like us, who already own it

Also people arguing in favour of the indie games for Wii U... just get them on PC. They run better, and you can't exactly argue you need a high end computer to run most indie games.

Well not all of them are on PC and it's more comfortable for me to have them on my consoles since I'm not a PC gamer

Most of my indie purchases are on my Ps3,WiiU,3DS and Vita.

Also,I meant in terms of real life usage not in terms of the company's situation producing it cuz that's a whole another topic in which I can agree on some points and disagree on others.Sure it failed but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy it like the Dreamcast and GameCube before it

The problem with the WiiU start with the name itself.

The name itself sounds like an upgraded Nintendo Wii, which in reality, it was far from that. Nintendo's biggest weakness is launching poor introductory titles with the console alongside having a lot to purchase (if you want to include the Wii nunchuck and classic controller). If Wind Waker HD, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, StarFox Zero and Mario Kart 8 came out at the time of the WiiU's release then it would have done so much better.

Alongside that, Nintendo has to stop treating graphics like they don't really matter. They're hardware specialists... and it kills me because they can make gorgeous games with slightly outdated hardware. If they had powerful graphical capabilities like Sony and Microsoft then Nintendo would create visual art in gameplay.

As much as a commercial flop the WiiU is, I will give Nintendo credit for not releasing games infected with countless (mandatory-ish) micro-transactions.

I wouldn't say a failure.  It's made some sales so it's had some success.  Also, what FL said.

Nora doesn't think the 3DS was a failure, but not too sure with the Wii U on the other hand... To Nora it's just a Wii with a tablet :/

Yes, it's a failure it's sold under 10 million units. And it's their own fault, they made an unpowered system that no developers want to develop for.

It depends how you look at it.

Nobody is buying it, so..... Yeah it is a failure in that sense. However, those that have bought one (myself included) enjoy it to bits because it has an amazing library of games. Smash was the reason I got mine, but I have a huge library of retail and Virtual Console games for it. The multiplayer games are fantastic to play with friends too (Smash, MK8, Mario3DW, NintendoLand, among others). The issues that arise from the system are down to Nintendo themselves. The name Wii U is a huge problem and the truth is, while they don't want to go toe to toe with Sony and Microsoft they have to in order to stay relevant for consumers. Shops near me don't care to sell the system any more and complain when nobody buys one (my local Gamestop does this). They need to give your average Joe a reason to buy the system, but kids these days only want a Playstation or an XBOX. In some ways I think Nintendo were doomed with the Wii U to begin with because of the relationship they had given fans with the Wii. We can't keep blaming 3rd parties for Nintendo's demise though, Nintendo get shafted a lot by 3rd parties who then only bitch when their games don't sell well on the system. Nintendo fans are more then happy to get a 3rd party on their system if it is a quality title, but if 3rd parties screw them about then why should they give them money? Two examples are Watch_Dogs and NFS: Most Wanted U. One is a joke and the other was the best version available on the market.

The Wii U is in its own little world, the masses will say it's a failure while the gamers/fans will say that they still enjoy the system. Honestly it really is a two sided argument. Sales do matter, but the games do too. For now, Nintendo's got the games and the others have the sales.

The Wii U I feel is a failure for one simple reason:

Nintendo did not give us what they promised.

I hold Nintendo accountable for claims they made to their fans and not follow through on them. They promised a system that appeals more to hardcore gamers, and a system that has far superior third party support and both of those things have been untrue. Third party support is actually WORSE on the Wii U than the original Wii. The system is clunky, and there are too many "hidden" fees to play an underpowered system. You need a Wiimote, rechargable batteries, and much more if you want to enjoy the FULL use of the system for more than like 4 games. Hell I only own a few games off the eShop (which is how a LOT OF PEOPLE BUY GAMES THESE DAYS SINCE NINTENDO DOESN'T MAKE ENOUGH AT LAUNCH SO THEY ARE ALWAYS SOLD OUT) and I am already almost halfway full in terms of storage for my 32GB unit. I will need to get an external hard drive very very soon. The PS4 at least comes with everything you need in the box.

And sorry, but the argument of "sales don't matter" is not a good one. Sales affect the value of the system as a whole in many ways. Developers will choose not to develop for a platform that is not selling well, and this is going to affect the overall amount of third party support the Wii U has. The whole argument of "you buy Nintendo systems for Nintendo games" is ridiculous. If Sony or Microsoft did that, people would throw a fit. Nintendo doesn't get a free pass for being Nintendo. When you promise me that I will be able to play my third party and get hardcore games on your system, you better deliver. If I have to invest in your competitor just to play 90% of my games then you have failed.

What's even more annoying is that there is a rumor that the NX will NOT be as powerful as the PS4 and is not attempting to compete with the PS4. If this ends up being true then I say this: what's the point? Why bother releasing a new system if it doesn't compete with the two that are already kicking your ass? If they do this it's more or less just a repackaged Wii U probably without the gamepad. Third party is not going to flock to a system that is underpowered, because they can make better looking games on your competitors.

Nintendo essentially made a console that plays Smash Bros. And it's clear that they think Smash Bros. will keep it alive. Look at all the crap that you can get for just Smash Bros.:

-$100 Gamecube adapter that ONLY PLAYS SMASH BROS.

-$40-50 Gamecube controller.

-$5-15 Amiibos which are more or less the equivalent to micro-transactions when you think about it.

-DLC for Smash Bros.

Does anyone consider how much stuff you need to buy to get the "definitive" Smash Bros. experience? They are banking solely on Smash Bros. and it's pathetic. It's more pathetic that stuff that other companies do, Nintendo gets to do and everyone just shrugs it off. Amiibos are freakin' Microtransactions in physical form! They are even more expensive than micro-transactions too! What do they honestly do in games? Unlock costumes? Let you move your characters from one console to another? Don't we have SD cards? And the internet? Why do you need this stupid figure to do that?

The Wii U is a failure in that it did not deliver what it promised almost 3 years later and it even had the advantage of a head start. It's also a failure in terms of sales.

Nintendo really dropped the ball with this platform, and while I own one and I enjoy the few games that I DO have on it, I spend a majority of my time on my PS4 and PC.

I'm not sure where you are getting those numbers from, I only paid €35 for BOTH my adaptor and Smash Bros. Edition GameCube Controller over on PlayAsia. Amiibo are not even required for Smash Bros. DLC adds more to a game that already has a lot of content to begin with and is fairly priced when compared to other fighting games.

Also, "banking solely on Smash Bros. and it's pathetic" that is ridiculous statement. Smash Bros is ONE of their biggest games on the Wii U, to not support it would be a missed opportunity. We'll no doubt get more content for Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon later down the line so they aren't banking solely on Smash Bros in the slightest.
