What Are Your Thoughts On VR Gaming?

Posted

So Sony's E3 conference got me to ask this question. I'm just curious to know what everyone thinks of VR gaming. In my opinion it seems like another unnecessary gimmick that isn't needed or wanted in the gaming world

it looks cool, but it can be better.

I haven't cared for it much, but I have a feeling VR will stick like Handhelds. I really need to try it though, to finalize how I feel.... Hmmm... Resident Eviil...

It's a gimmick it'll probably die off once its been out for a year

There's nothing really wrong with VR, conceptually at least imo. It's supposed to add a new level of immersion, right? But I think the problem is that Sony's making like half of their things VR, and it makes it just look like a gimmick, as Tails said. If they only had, say, Resident Evil VR and maybe Batman VR, no one would really mind, probably. But FFXV VR? That's not worth limiting yourself from the experience the actual game provides (unless it is like the actual game but it didn't look like it).

Also more gaming shtuff means more money spent

I hate that we have to use VR just to play as Prompto. Why can't we just play as him the way we were originally going to back when the game was called Versus XIII?

Disagreed. It's like any time a step forward is taken with gameplay possibilities there's always someone willing to rain on the parade. This is't another "gimmick" like 3D or voice control (personally I like 3D), this was what video games were striving to be for years. The idea with each new generation is to keep pushing the boundaries of immersion, to bring the player even further and deeper into the game. The humble beginnings here will lead to even more revolutionary developments years from now, to the point where games might even have interactive projections to add physicality to the experience. I guess I'm a bit of a futurist here, but the point is that this is no mere gimmick. If something starts and remains a staple for several years and generations, it's stopped being a gimmick. If VR is allowed to continue and grow it will be about as common place as motion control and perhaps even more creative.

I think it'll be like motion controls. Cool at first, and a handful of games will really utilize it, and then it will go away.

Wait, so you can't control the other characters in the main game? :/ That's a bit of a letdown

And by limiting I meant that XVVR just looks like it's a shooter or something, and may not even have the main story.

Even the audience was like yeah whatever.

Not with Kingdom Hearts, please Square, never do this. Can you imagine the headaches?

I just don't care about VR

Its the future of gaming IMO. It has to be done properly though. I still think there's no way the PS4 OR PS4 NEO with the PSVR can output good quality games at playable framerates. If someone is really interested in VR, they should build a gaming rig with a high-end GPU and Oculus Rift or HTC Vive

Personally at the moment it's just too damn expensive. I want to wait a few years, for consoles, pc hardware, and VR hardware to really improve and make VR seem a little more legit. As well as for the price to lower quite a bit hopefully. Right now I still feel like in a sense it's a beta option for games. They're still working out the kinks, trying to figure out how to make the best experiences. So I figure i'll wait until everything is figured out, it's running smoothly, the games are even more epic, and then I might try it out. Kind of worried about getting queezy from it though. I can't even handle GTA V in first person, even more so at higher frame rates. It's so hard to look at, watch, and play even for me.

Just another gimmick.

They sold me on it, some of the games shown got my theater roaring.

I'm one of the few people here who is remotely interested, and I'm older than all ya'll! Perhaps it's because I grew up in a generation where people always talked about VR being the future of gaming.

One thing to keep in mind is that the technology itself is still in its infancy. Obviously, with the heavy headsets, it's not exactly an experience you can do for hours at a time with all that neck strain. But within a few years, you'll start to see companies promoting lighter headsets.

AMD and nVidia have been making investments in VR. Now, one can argue that they failed with their investments in 3D gaming, and thus, their investment in VR will see no return, but that's because 3D never really had a place in gaming, and was never really hyped to begin with. VR is something that has been talked about for decades, but was also something that needed real timing to make it worthwhile. That timing was an era of better graphics, as well as cheaper gyro technology. Better graphics, of course, was the main thing. You know why? Because in VR, each frame must be able to render at a whopping 90 FPS in order to keep most people from vommiting! This was especially tough, because we ideally want HD, even 2160p resolutions, to render in each eye.

Thanks to mobile technologies, the demand for both went up, and the cost started to decline. Unfortunately, with delays to the 16 and 14 nanometer process in CPU's and GPU's, AMD and nVidia were stuck with 28 nm technology, and it was getting stale. Now, we have the introduction of new technologies, including HBM (and soon, HBM2) and GDDR5X memory, smaller die dhrinks and the introduction of APIs (e.g. DirectX12) that, under the right circumstances, can increase frame rates. With the combination of all these coming out around the same time frame, the formula for making VR on a consumer level was finally made real. And, even outside of VR, gamers are only going to reap the benefits from these technologies, and technology companies will only continue to improve their boards because the presence VR practically demands it.

Now, we are at a point where gaming can continue to evolve with the presence of VR. Yes, it is an expensive investment at first (more so for PC's). And while many are still not on board, there are still many who are, but simply can not afford it. All that said, I think it is far to soon to completely dismiss it as a thing that will never become popular. And if it doesn't... If gaming is never to evolve beyond the controller, keyboard and mouse, then gaming itself is only doomed to die in the coming years. You can only keep it fun for so long.

Anyway. Sorry for my stupid wall of text. I'll go hide in my corner now.

it's a cool little shtick but i don't see it replacing my main means of gaming.

a controller and a couch work just fine for me.

VR will have it's place in gaming though. I think certain kinds of games will lend themselves to it. Horror games for sure.

For all the naysayers I have just one thing to say, try it, then you'll see, you have no ideia of the feeling you have when you play something in VR, it's just not possible to describe using words, you'll have to try it to understand. So please, don't dismiss it as just another gimmick yet, trust me.

I absolutely detest and hate the idea of VR altogether ever since the virtual boy and that won't change here

I hate the fact that I need to strap some weird space googles on my head that not only will make me look like an idiot while playing, but also will cause me some severe eye problems and mark my words................Just soon after all this VR bullshit gets released you'll see  eye problems and causes of blindness being reported up the wazoo

Not to mention that it's so freakin expensive even with Sony's pricing of 400$..............I can buy two consoles with the price of this firetrucking thing

How about the people that DID try it but didn't like it?

And why do I have to spend 400$ just to freakin try something that I fully know I won't like? It's like spending your money on a movie you know you won't like after seeing the trailers just to tell someone else that you tried

I'm not spending a dime on VR be it the Oculus Rift,Hololens or even the PSVR

Wearing the huge thing really doesn't seem comfortable

Especially for someone who uses glasses.

I totally want to try it.  It sounds awesome!  Hopefully they can do it right.

You do know you don't have to buy it to try it right? And I use glasses, and I can still see fine even with playing with VR.
