I can't really think of any situation where it would be necessary to know it.

I found myself in such a situation several years ago for the (British) Queen's Diamond Jubilee - 60 years on the throne - when everyone was singing the national anthem and I realised the only line I knew was 'God save the Queen'! I then made sure that I at least learned the first verse of it so I wouldn't feel so stupid next time.

I can sing it off the top of my head but as others have said, I don't find my Nation's dependent on whether or not I can sing these words or not.

As someone whose first language isn't entirely english let me assure you there are different ways to express patriotism and gratitude beyond a song.

I'm in Northern Ireland (so we get the choice between British ones and Irish ones), I know the names of them but not the words cause why would I bother.

God Save the Queen and Land of Hope and Glory (Britain)

Amhran na bhFiann (Ireland)

Kind of, but Welsh is a difficult language.

Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi,
Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;
Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr* tra mad,
Tros ryddid collasant eu gwaed.
Cytgan:
Gwlad, gwlad, pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad,
Tra môr yn fur
I'r bur hoff bau,
O bydded i'r hen iaith barhau.

2. Hen Gymru fynyddig, paradwys y bardd,
Pob dyffryn, pob clogwyn, i'm golwg sydd hardd;
Trwy deimlad gwladgarol, mor swynol yw si
Ei nentydd, afonydd, i mi.
Cytgan:

3. Os treisiodd y gelyn fy ngwlad dan ei droed,
Mae hen iaith y Gymry mor fyw ag erioed,
Ni luddiwyd yr awen gan erchyll law brad,
Na thelyn berseiniol fy ngwlad.

In Primary School we had to sing the Australian Anthem at every Assembly on a Monday Afternoon, so it's not too hard to remember xD

Singing the Aussie National Anthem as a kid and not knowing what "girt by sea" meant xD #growingupaustralianPeace!

God save our gracious QueenLong live our noble QueenGod save the QueenSend her victoriousHappy and gloriousLong to reign over usGod save the Queen

Or the primary school version

Smack her in the gob

With a walls ice cream

Long to annoy us

God save the Queen

...

I think I just committed treason, but if I did then so did everyone else in primary school. YEAH THAT'S RIGHT, I'M TAKING YOU DOWN WITH ME.

I never actually knew the anthem until the London Olympics, when I was 13 xD

Never too late I suppose, but I knew the general tune and that

However, I did know Jerusalem, which is seen as *England's * anthem. In the sane vein Flower of Scotland is Scotlands anthem.

And did those feet in ancient times

Walk upon England's mountains green

And was the holy lamb of God

On England's pleasant pastures seen

And did the countenance divine

Shine on upon our clouded hills

And was Jerusalem builded here

Upon these dark satanic mills

Didn't know what "girt by sea" meant until like grade 6, you'd think they'd explain something we sing constantly haha

THERE'S A SECOND VERSE x.x-.- we have the shittest anthem in the world, I'd much rather something like the marseillase (however it's written)

Yes we always sing it in school every morning

its a filipino language

Bayang magiliw

Perlas ng silanganan

Alab ng puso

Sa dibdib mo'y buhay

Lupang Hinirang

May mang-aapi

Ang mamatay ng dahil sayo
