I really hope they do, they've always done it so I dunno why they would just stop.

I don't really mind as long as they're not region locked. *cough*NINTENDO*cough*

That's what I'm hoping for. PS3 couldn't play PS2 games while 360 could play old XBox games, so PS4 should play old-gen games!

As for the PS4, the answer is Yes and No.

If the rumors are true, the PS4 will be ditching its cell core processor. This meaning that it will be physically impossible for the system to play older games. However, Sony owns Gaikai, which is a cloud based service, so we'll most likely be able to play PSX-PS3 games that way. Personally I can't wait to see what they do with the Gaikai thing, hope they make the most of it.

Probably.

They more than likely won't. Maybe the Xbox will but knowing Sony it won't be, unless it is at the start of the PS4 lifespan and then they remove it later in its life.I dunno and to be honest I don't even care.

I think they will, enough fans want them, the companies will lose out on money if they dont do it and they will be shamed.

I seriously doubt it. I recall reading about why they stopped backwards compatibility with the PS2.

I've heard rumors that they won't be able to, but I hope they aren't true.

I don't think either will. They are really changing the hardware setups in both systems. Especially PS4 moving from the cell processor to a more standard AMD processor. The other issue is the operating system of each. In order to play the older games, it requires an emulator of sorts. Similar to the way wii u works when it goes into "wii mode" to play wii games (though it doesnt necessarily have to have a separate mode for it). I think the PS4 will not be backwards compatible with discs, maybe digital downloads later. Xbox is more likely to be backwards compatible, but with the complications developers are seeing with the operating system, I could see it not being backwards compatible either.

Here's my thing with backwards compatibility: I think we're approaching the start of the era where the game companies say, if they can download it, we can sell it. Though it looks like its receding, backwards compatibility is poised to make a bigger wave than ever as digital downloads become more and more common. The main barrier that is preventing that from happening is cost.

Think about all the digital game content that you can play only with your 360 and PS3, and what would happen if the next consoles are completely non-backwards compatible. If both Microsoft and Sony start out with no digital game content other than what's available for their launch titles, their new system's online infrastructures are going to seem like a joke. Why should I early adopt when I still have Mass Effect 3 DLC to go through, or Skyrim DLC, or I haven't played Journey or the Walking Dead? I know all that content has been out for a while, but it's a serious question; I've been playing games nonstop and I'm terribly behind still. I'm seeing little reason to upgrade my PS3 if I can't play the PS3 games I've yet to go through. Rumor has it that Sony is using its recently acquired streaming service to allow old games to be streamed onto its new system, though if true it likely rules out the possibility of having disc-based backwards compatibility.

I'm hoping for a dual model scenario, where there's a standard, plain old PS4/720 and there's a model available for a higher price tag that can run games that aren't even a generation old. Heck, GTAV is coming, and Rockstar has said they aren't porting the game to the next gen. Why should I buy something that can't play that?

Both probably will be.

At least, if their respective game companies aren't complete morons. They should know customers might not buy if there's no backwards compatibility of some sort. Even if it's just downloading at a later date. But that'd be quite unfair for those who already own the game on the previous console and don't want to have to repurchase it for a newer one.

There should be an "I hope so" option.

Do you think the upcoming next-generation systems will be backwards compatible? I think both maybe...

The original ps3 was but they removed it from later versions and made it a download only compatible with certain models....I hope that doesn't happen again :/

It would be stupid if they weren't .

I have a bad feeling about this...

The first model might be, but i doubt the newer models wont, since they ussually take that away

If I never experienced hardware issues with the PS3, I would have said the PS4 doesnt need to be BC.

That's what I'm hoping for. PS3 couldn't play PS2 games while 360 could play old XBox games, so PS4 should play old-gen games!

You do know the fat PS3's can play PS2 games, right?

I have no idea whatsoever, but I sure want them to

Most people voted Yes for both but I guess unfortunately there will be No backwards compatibility. But I sure do hope it does have it.

I hope so, but I can see "PS3 Classics" coming already
