Why did Microsoft have to make the Xbox?

Featured Replies

Why? Money, of course. They had to make it because the executive bigwigs saw profit in video games.

Thank you for this post sir. Jolly good show.

They went to video games interests just to compete and beat Sony because Sony refused their offer when they wanted to join Sony's company...Such a childish way of competing....

without xbox maybe there would be more creditable gamers out there....

I don't hate the Xbox brand itself, but I hate Microsoft

The reason I hate Microsoft is because they tried to control the experience of their consumers through all this DRM bullshit...I don't want a company to be watching me 247 or forces me to connect online just to play a game that doesn't even need online in the first place

I know they've reversed their policies but they still have to walk a long road of redemption, because if we didn't shout at them for the bullshit they've been doing, they would've continued with their model and the competition might've followed suit through future updates if the idea of DRM proved to be successful

Regardless of DRM or not...I still don't trust Microsoft after all of what happened,I'm sticking with Sony and Nintendo when it comes to Video games

And even if I trusted them,I don't have any interest in the Xbox One

Fool. I like video games. More the merrier.

Why did Sony make the Playstation?

....Okay, actually, the story's a little more complicated than that I suppose. Sony was originally working with Nintendo on a disc-based console during the 64-bit era (basically 5-gen gaming), but for some reason or another Nintendo decided to stick with cartridges for the 64, so Sony instead decided to make it's own disc-based console, the Playstation (later, PlastationOne). It's superior hardware proved to become the main obstacle and hindrance for the 64's success, as well as the main cause for the failure of SEGA's Saturn system...well, okay, some of it was SEGA's fault too.

The point is though, Sony didn't have to enter the console wars. After Nintendo canceled their partnership, they could have just left it at that and moved on with the rest of their hardware manufacturing. But Sony saw an opportunity, to both make a new legacy and a profit, and they took that chance and now look where it's gotten them. Sony is now one of the top gaming manufacturers in the world, 2nd only to Nintendo, while Microsoft is constantly riding on Sony's heels, both sort of forming a semi-rivalry within the "competition" as it were.

If this point applies to Sony, then it can apply to Microsoft too, only with less back-story. Microsoft was already a computing giant and had a lot of money. Microsoft saw Sony, Nintendo, and SEGA duking it out from his mansion window, and saw how much of mess those idiotic commoners where making. Then, he suddenly noticed how much money each of the companies were making, and while none of them could every possibly have as much money as he did, Microsoft still believed he was superior in every sense and decided to throw his lot into the ring in an attempt to make even MORE money, as well as to prove a point...which was money is power...or something....

And that was my lame attempt at storytelling everyone! There was definitely a lot more to it than that and Microsoft probably had different reasons for doing so......but seeing them as they are today, I wouldn't be surprised if that WAS the reason they got into the race during the 6th generation of the Console Wars.

Microsoft should just focus on Windows.

Yes, they should.  And half the time they're not even good at that (Vista).

I don't understand why people hate the Xbox so much to say that it shouldn't exist. If you don't like it, then don't play it and don't pay attention to it.

Why did Microsoft have to make Windows 8?

Yeah no offnse bit really the entire sustem and everything behind it is stupid. THE WHOLE MEMBERSHIP AND LIVE THING?C sorry that wasnt meant to be in caps i this ilad sucks.

BUT YEAH THE PAYING TO GET STUFF THAT SHOULDC BE FREE ANYWAYS ths kinda duv

Jesus vhrist sorry i hate ipad, excuse my last post this thing cant keep up with me typing and for some reason put everything in caps.

Yeah i just hate the xbox tbh. Sure the buddy system is cool, i like the people you cna make (like the equivalent of miis or whatever, same thing) but i think its stupid that you have to pay for online access, a thing that SHOULD be free, anyways. I see no point in it.are there even any games that are solely exclusive to the xbox? If not, then i see no resson for it.

Ill admit it looks more user friendly than playatation, but...idk man. Id rather not blow all my money and firetruck around with the xbox's stupid, shitty, messy interface. playstation is easy. You wanna play a game you firetrucking GO there, none of this prepaid card bullshit idk

The console itself is alright. It's Microsoft themselves digging a deep hole. Downscaling in video games happens on the PS3 as well in terms of graphics. Sure it's a slightly superior console than the 360 but not by a large margin. MGS4 had to be upscaled to 1080P from a 1024X768 render resolution.

As for the next-gen consoles, we'll have to see in the coming months to see how it goes, sure it's all about the specs but we have to see how the software will deliver in each console favor and sales wise.

Only problem with microsoft now is that they're trying to mimic apple in a lot of ways. Kinda worrisome to be honest, but I hope I'm wrong.

Like DC said, it's about the competition. Without the Wii, there won't be a major leap in motion gaming. Without the Xbox, there won't be online connectivity between friends. Without Playstation, there won't be great software games. They're pretty much helping one another unconciously and I'm ok with that. In the end, you're just buying them for the games. Not to talk crap about it all the time.

Why did Microsoft have to make Windows 8?

Now, that is the question.

Potential gap in market.

Fill the gap.

Why did Microsoft have to make Windows 8?

Because they needed a new operating system. Windows 7 was released in 2009. The world has changed enormously since then.

In fairness, Vista was Microsoft's first OS without Bill Gates.

There are still a large amount of PC users who have Windows 7 instead of 8, myself included. Windows 8 is a huge step down from 7. Heck, if I get booted off Windows 7, I'm switching to Linux. :/

No it's not. Lol. Windows 8 is Microsoft's best OS yet.

For touchscreen devices, maybe. I'm not even touching that OS, Windows 7's the best OS ever made. I see no need at all to upgrade, so I won't.

Even though I agree, it's a good thing.

Competition is always good for the consumers. How is it good? Well, better prices is the most obvious.
