It's annoying going to a member's profile and having a song automatically play. DChiuch has said he'll only disable it if you guys support the decision to remove it.

 

Update: Thank you everyone for voting. It has been decided that the autoplay code will not be disabled but DChiuch "will see about having a per-user disabling option sometime in the future, but this will be pretty difficult to make so I don't know when it'll happen."

Autoplay rocks. The point of it is for your profile theme, and if you don't like it, just mute your speakers before entering a profile, I do that all the time.

If something this trivial sends you away from this site, then you really don't want to be here. It's simple.

Personally I support removing the autoplay, as I think it's a bit unfair for users for a couple of reasons:

 

1. It's annoying having to mute my speakers when randomly browsing people's profiles, or having to find the YouTube box and stop the video if I'm using the sound elsewhere on my computer. This can also be difficult sometimes, if the user has hidden the YouTube box somewhere not obvious.

2. Some users may have limited bandwidth and to force them to start loading a video when they visit someone's profile is unfair.

 

On the other hand, I know how upset users get when features are removed, so I would only support removing the autoplay if a lot of other users feel the same way. So, for this reason I'm voting "I don't mind either way."

I'd prefer if it was removed. I can tolerate it on people's profiles because I don't click those often, but when I click a thread and autoplay starts, it can be super annoying. I usually listen to music while I'm on here, so my speakers are always on.

I'm for getting rid of it. I have rather slow internet, so this makes loading pages a pain in the ass. Plus, I tend to have a lot of tabs open, annd the song doesn't start playing until minutes after I load the page. Most of the time it takes me a while to find where it's coming from.

This says everything. It's not allowed on the forum, so there's really no reason to make people who like having autoplay music on their profile suffer.

 

Yeah, there are some people who have bandwith limitations, but how many? How many of those people are active? How many of those people already know better then to go on someone elses profile? I would make an entirely seperate poll seeing how many members have bandwith limitations before making this decision, because otherwise you'll remove a feature that a lot of people love for the sake of people who may very well be part of a very small minority. But if you just go ahead and remove it without even knowing, that's kind of ridiculous.

I see that you used first person terms in that an awful lot. "my speakers" "stop the video if I'm using the sound somewhere else". You doing this for the sake of the members or because it annoys you personally? 

 

And I can only think of like two profiles I've been to where the YouTube box is somewhere not obvious. Almost all of the ones I've seen have it tucked away nicely at the bottom, and sometimes closer to the top.

 

And you know, a lot of things annoy people. But people sometimes have to suck it up and deal with it. Have a bandwith limitation? Don't go to peoples profiles. Have slow internet? Not a lot you can do about that, and I hardly think removing an autoplay video on someones profile will ease the struggle of it. Annoyed by it? Stop the video.

 

Hell maybe make a rule that says you can have autoplay on your profiles but it has to be at the top of the screen, so you can immediately see it and stop it from playing if you so choose. Maybe there's a way that you can add it to a members settings under preferences so that they won't have Autoplay activated for them, instead of having it turned off site-wide.

How about this: Have the policy be to put the autoplay video at the top of the profile, so if the visitor wants to click out of it immediately, they can. That way, everyone wins. Users don't have to remove their autoplay, and people who don't like it can just get rid of it right when they enter. 

 

EDIT: I made this change to my profile just now, so that we can see how well it works.

 

EDIT AGAIN: I just realized RoxSox said the same thing. That must mean it's a good idea if two people were able to think of it separately

Eg: I heard an auto play I didn't like but I wasn't hassled at all to turn it off. Turning it off didn't even phase me. I think if you find it difficult to use one finger to press a button on a web page then you are quite lazy.

You're quite lazy if you find it difficult to press a button to play a video.

 

Come on guys, it's not like we're saying you can't have music on your profile, it's just that it wouldn't play automatically. I remember when no one used autoplay...good times.

 

Seriously, if you're going to someone's profile and their annoying music automatically plays there's nothing you can do but press stop or mute your computer. But why should we? We're going to that person's profile to PM them or comment on their profile or check a detail or something not to hear your music.
