KH3 and Open World - yes or no?

Posted

Do you think that the concept of Open World would fit into the KH universe?

In the past games we have only seen tight, branched areas. KH3D is an exception, because the areas were much larger in comparison with the older games, but not really Open World. Due to the current gen hardware, SE has the possibility to enlarge every world, fill it with life and connect every area with each other without loading screens. There wouldn't be any limits.

Imagine a Twilight Town, where you can go to the rooftops and walking around without being interrupted by a black screen. There are many people on the streets and you use flowmotion to reach the top of the clock tower and to see the sunset in beautiful HD graphics.

Any opinions? Should KH try this step? Do you think that it will happen this way without a doubt but it shouldn't be called Open World? Or do you prefer it unchanged and think, that there are already too much Open World games and KH shouldn't be one of them?

please no

It would be cool, but I think it's a little late to make such a drastic change as adding in walking civilians. Especially when the majority of people aren't supposed to know Keybladers exist. Emphasis on "aren't supposed to ". The only reason why many of the current Disney characters have even gotten involved with Keyblade bearers in the first place, is because it was unavoidable.

Maybe in the next saga, though! :)

maybe, but I don't know how that would work for kingdom hearts 3.

The KH team is too small for that.

I see no problem here. The only thing that must dissapear are the loading screens at least. That is no obstacle for the current gen power. A world would make more the impression of a big, connected area.

The KH team only has about 70-100 people.

The number of developer doesn't indicate anything. Everything can happen.

Yes, it does, it would mean the difference between it coming out in 2018 or 2020. Not to mention it's not even in Square Enix's top 4 teams.

I don't see Kingdom Hearts as an open world game. As much as I love the idea of it, it would be weird to change up the game formula now after all they've released so far.

this this this a billion times this

I don't get how a person thinking making a well designed world that's also huge and seamless takes a lot more TIME, not just power

Especially when you consider how much art and design goes into KH worlds already to meet the aesthetic standards of the Disney cartoons. Doing that on a massive scale is insane

I don't think it works. How do you make seamless world, when all the worlds are separated? I mean sure, you could get rid of loading screens in individual worlds and make the areas bigger, but that still wouldn't be open world because it's not a single mass. You can't go from the surface of a world to the Lanes Between seamlessly, it's just not possible. It's not like crossing an ocean in an MMO. Besides, I like how each world as a unique screen wipe.

a game can be open world and still have separate areas

Lightning Returns is open world, but is split into four areas that you can only access through a train

No thank you I like how the world are now

Would love a game where you physically travel to each world. Maybe a spin-off though?

More people in the worlds sounds good, but the open world idea is not something I would like in KH. I think the idea of limiting the areas with the black screen and all is a part of the series that makes it what it is, change it and you're in for a really risky risk...

as big like kh3d would be nice, with more detailed textures and npc, more lively town

The KH team is too small for that.

Not for long. ;)

It will be open world.

Open world doesn't sound very realistic in terms of development schedule. If they were to implement open world in KH3, we'd have to wait even LONGER for it to come out. They've already got their hands full on FF XV as it is. It would make sense if they made all the areas on a bigger scale like they did DDD, but ss far as open world goes, it doesn't seem likely right now.

I personally don't think it needs an open world.  It needs the large areas they make to actually be populated and have stuff to do in them instead of just being a long trek to the other side, but I don't think it really needs an open world.  And as Sora96 said a large grand and decent open world would take some manpower, games development is a lengthy, costly and gruelling process, considering the loading screens are rather short and few and far between now it's rather unnecessary.  A fully open entity of a world could also have issues with enemies respawning, I know you could set them to respawn after a certain amount of time even if you haven't left the area (like in MM3D) but I feel that inhibits exploring cause you constantly have to be on your guard in case an enemy that was behind you decides to come to life again without you noticing.  I also don't think an open world is necessarily something that is needed for a game to be good.

It still doesn't make sense for KH, the land masses in LR may have been islands, but they where still part of one, unified world, and still physically  connected by monorail and the Major Routes, they weren't separate planets with invisible walls around them. Besides which, after a certain point it becomes possible to physically travel between the continents on foot.

I should have been more clear, even if it's technologically possible, it doesn't make sense from a story standpoint. At best you could do a semi-open world style like Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Honestly, I don't think that an open world KH game would turn out well. As it is, they already seem to have trouble making these worlds actually feel like, well, worlds. I would much rather they keep the world size of DDD or KH2 and add in actual NPCs instead.

Open World in no way dictates that the world has to be completely connected, that's an arbitrary criteria

Open world is just a genre to describe games with large sand box environments that give the player freedom. The world is 'open' to the player, that's all

Assassn's Creed is open world but contains many areas you can't simply walk to. It's not a requirement
