Ben Diskin discusses latest Kingdom Hearts III trailer and recording process in reddit AMA

I think his performance has been flawless so far, so I fully trust what Square is doing.

I thought he did great with his voice in the KH3 trailer. I see where he's coming from in that he doesn't understand why he would sound younger. Based on KH3D, I would think that version of him would sound older, if anything. Still, I liked the sound of his voice there better than in 3D (not that it was bad in 3D, I just prefer this one).

I didn't even notice a difference in pitch tbh. To me it just sounded like he was being quieter, which makes sense given the setting and whats going on in the scene. You're not going to be as loud playing a game of chess with your friend than you ate while explaining your maniacal plan to your latest victem.

I think he gave a very stellar performance in both KH3D and the KH3 trailer. He's one of my favorite voice actors and I think he makes a great contribution to the already diverse cast of KH.

In terms of voice difference, I guess in terms of headcanon you could always say that the Young Xehanort in 3D developed a bit more of a deeper tone to match the dark task that he was given, trying to remain emotionally distant until he neared the completion of his goal and learned exactly what Master Xehanort was planning. That being said, by the time that experience was erased from his memory and he resumed his natural timeline he probably reverted to his younger more innocent sounding inquisitive voice. And yeah, it also matches the tone of the scene he's in, why would you try to sound menacing and foreboding when all you are doing is just playing chess with your best friend? Just because we know he's going to be evil doesn't mean he does.

"Did they give me a breakdown of the plot? Well, I ASKED for one to which they responded with laughter."

Ahahaha.

Ben did an amazing job with the voice acting! He really did set the mood because well...chess games are suppose to be calm right xD? He also did a really awesome job on voice acting for Dream Drop Distance and by far Young Xehanort is one of my favorites all because of how well Ben emotionally played him and how he was able to set the dark tone for what his ambitions are. Other than that we can't wait to see more!

I legitimately have so much respect for the sheer honesty of this guy. For him to disclose as much as he is able to with optimism (especially with the deadlocked contracts he has), I take even more pride in having him be a part of the Kingdom Hearts voice cast.

I didn't notice the pitch of his voice. It sounded the same to me. He did a great job regardless! :)

First off, cool interview. Ben Diskin seems like a neat guy, and the amount of caring he has for his character almost makes me care more about Young Xehanort.

Second... does that seem like atrocious directing to anyone else? Not telling your actors what their motivations are is kind of absurd.

Laughter is basically the only thing you can do if someone asks for the plot of KH.

Ben Diskin's work as YX's VA is simply amazing; even without knowing that much about his character's true ways/plans, Diskin's always been able to convey through his (marvelous) voice that sense of mistery surrounding YX... not to mention Diskin sounds cunning as well while voicing YX and this is pretty good for such a sly character! Anyway, to put it briefly: awesome job, Diskin!

Technically, YX is actually older in the KHIII trailer since the YX that we see in KHDDD had time-traveled from Destiny Islands while the YX we see in the KHIII trailer has already made it to the Land of Departure and made friends with Eraqus.

I'm not a voice actor, but I would've been kinda annoyed with that direction. I would think the character's motivation would be pretty essential to doing a good voice for them.

That said, Diskin was fantastic in DDD, and I really didn't notice a difference in the trailer. He's probably one of my favorite voices in the entire series, really.

This was a great read, and well, I think that Ben is a really talented voice actor, and when I read that he had been the one who voiced Numbuh One in KND, I was like: "Wait, what?  That's frickin awesome!"  Haha, honestly, when I saw the Dream Drop Distance trailer for the first time, I thought that Young Xehanort was voiced by Liam O'Brien, since the way the character spoke reminded me of said voice actor.  But, when I found out that Ben was the actor, everything cleared up!  And well, I absolutely loved his voice as Young Xehanort in KH3D, he's by far, one of my favorite characters in the series, and well, the voice Ben gives to the character really suits him well! :3

And wow, Square really is secretive!  They don't even let their voice actors in on the game's plot or anything! O.O  Good God, Nomura really wants to keep things as secretive as possible!  Well, I can't blame the guy, this is the finale of the Xehanort Saga after all, so what would be the point of spoiling ourselves ahead of time, eh? I'll gladly wait until I have the game in my hands to experience the story in all its glory!

But yeah, Ben is great, and I look forward to hearing him as Young Xehanort once again in Kingdom Hearts III! :D

I do a little bit of voice acting on the side, and I can confirm that this would be very frustrating. However, I understand that they don't want to reveal too much, because it would be hard to keep tabs on every single thing every voice actor says in interviews/social media/etc. Part of being a pro is dealing with these adversities and making it work anyway.

When I heard YX's voice in the KH3D trailer, I was like,"IS THAT NUMBUH ONE?! OF THE KIDS NEXT DOOR?!!" Fangasms happened afterwards.

He's pretty :)

Well, reading this explains why the voice seems slightly different. I was wondering at first if they got a new actor. Then, comes this and I'm like "oh wow that explains everything". I wonder how far into acting they are or better yet, if they are done.

Now when he said "That's totally Mark Hamill! XD" when they were asking him if he thought it was Hamill playing Young Eraqus in the trailer, I have to wonder, was that an opinion, joke, or a possible confirmation? I don't want to jump any guns here though, considering he stated several times that he is under a NDA.
