Friend wants to get into Kingdom Hearts, in what order should he play the games?

Posted

I have a friend that wants to play Kingdom Hearts in its entirety after I showed him the last 6 or so hours of the game. Considering how many few moments that make sense or aren't completely redundant exist in this franchise, what will be the best order to play the games?

Playing the games in the order they came out could work at the expense of making the older games make less sense, but the newer games leave more of an impact.

Following the game's timeline would make things less confusing, but would probably spoil some parts of the game... somehow....

Also, there are a few games that I feel should be left out entirely as they have been remade into a better version, or don't really serve the plot at all.

So, any advice?

Play in the order they came out. By doing that they can experience the excitement other people felt when it came out. When you play kh1 you'll have all these questions and that makes you want to play KH even more. Same with the other games in the series

I know Nomura intentionally makes the plots of every kingdom hearts game in a way so that its easy to enter anywhere, but...I'd suggest starting with Kh1, Then re:com, then Kh2. From there, BBS, Days, and Re: Coded can be in any order.

Whatever you do, start with KH1. It's hard to go back to that after playing all the better KH games.

But yeah, going by release date is probably the best choice, since the plot and reveals are contoured around that timeline. Play BBS first and pretty much everything gets spoiled Days just casually reveals everything about KH2.

So yeah, I'd go by release dates

Play in the order they were released..if they play in the story order they might wonder why certain characters or plot points were not mentioned.

just start with how they came out. best possible way if he wanna experience just like us.

KH1

CoM

KH2

358/2 Days

BBS

Re:Coded

Dream Drop Distance

  • Kingdom Hearts
  • Re:COM
  • Kingdom Hearts 2
  • 358/2 Days
  • Birth by Sleep
  • Re:Coded

well i started with days, then played kh2, re coded, COM, bbs, lol soooo if he's really into kh after one game, any order should do. just find a game for his first

Depends how he wants too. I played Birth by Sleep first, and found the experience with the kids made me want to see them older. I played in chronological, and it worked. Maybe he doesn't want to experience it the way the fans did.

Kingdom Hearts.

Kingdom Hearts II.

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep.

Kingdom Hearts 3D Dream Drop Distance.

Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories/Reverse Rebirth.

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days.

Kingdom Hearts Coded.

that's my recommending list for your friend.

He could play it in the way they were released, but if he ever decides to play it in chronological order:

BBS

KH1

358/2 days(stop at Day 21 when Saix tells you the Org members left)

Re:COM

358/2 days(continue playing)

KH2

Re:Coded

KH3D

Have them play the main titles (1,2 and BBS) and maybe Re:COM (or just tell them to watch the cutscenes on Youtube) first, then Days. Days has the unfortunate position of both being reliant on all the other titles to have a meaningful story and spoiling a crapton about COM, 2 and BBS.

One last thing. Final Mix cutscenes. Find them subbed, show them. Some of BBS's and Days' plot gets a whole new meaning with them.

Like most people are saying go by the release date, I mean there's a reason they released the games in the order that they are, personally I think for story telling purposes it would be best to go by release date.

This is just pure assumption because I've never done this, but I feel like if you went by the chronological order of events everything would be too linear and things would be practically spoon fed to you, instead of you questioning and trying to predict the plot and stuff..so yeaa.

do it in the order they came out, the combat system only improves, playing BBS then KH1 would be a huge let down combat wise. You could switch 358 with KH2 without really doing anything drastic, but playing KH2 before is what really makes Roxas interesting. so stick with the original way that we all played.

I'm actually curious as to how someone would look at the series after playing the games in story order. But, I do agree that people should start with the first game at least. Dunno why, it just seems appropriate.

1.) BBS

2.) KH1

3.)KH Re:CoM

4.) 358/2 Days

5.)KH2

6.) Re:coded

7.) KH3D

I thought the title meant that he wanted to be a Kingdom Hearts character.

I always tell my friends who are experiencing the series for the first time to play the games in the order they came out. Like several others in this thread have said, that's the order in which they were meant to be experienced. Playing the games in chronological order would be like watching Star Wars in chronological order. Just...no...

As for skipping any of the games...it really depends on how much your friend loves the series. If he's head-over-heels for the series, don't tell him to skip any of them. If he thinks it's cool but isn't passionately in love with it, the only game I think that's appropriate to skip would be Re:coded...just have him watch the ending and the secret ending, and he'll be good. And I guess he could also skip CoM as long as he plays Re:CoM, but I'm not really counting remakes/originals here. That's just my opinion. :P

Kingdom Hearts 1

Kingdom Hearts BBS

Kingdom Hearts COM

Kingdom Hearts 2 but stop at the end of Roxas' bit

Kingdom Hearts Days

Continuing playing Kingdom Hearts 2 starting as Sora

Kingdom Hearts Coded

Kingdom Hearts 3D

Don't forget to tell him that he's going to be spending a lot of money.

Unless he has every console possible. But still, the games will be expensive.

You need three consoles in total to play every KH; a 3DS, a PS2 and a PSP

And each game besides DDD weighs in a 20 dollars or less.

Like it seems like most everyone else is saying, I'd say play them in order of release for the best experience:

Kh1, Kh Re:Com, Kh2, Kh 358/2 Days, Kh BBS, Kh Re:coded. If he wanted to feel a little more nostalgia, he could play the original Com as well, I couldn't tell you the actual purpose of it but still, if he wanted to see what it was like :P

He should start with KH1 since BBS has Sora in the end and he'll be wondering, "Who the heck is Sora?" so definitely go by the order they came out in so it will be fluid and make more sense.

And at the end of KH1, he'll see 'Where is Sora?' when he finds out Roxas is Sora's body they'll ask 'What is Sora?' and when playing Dream Drop Distance they'll ask 'When is Sora?'

All that's left is 'Why is Sora?' and 'How is Sora'
