Disney Confirms Maleficent 2 and Eight Other New Films

Featured Replies

No! No! Disney sequels (with the exception of Toy Story) have been the bane of the world since since The Little Mermaid 2!

Wow a Jungle Book 2 is the works. I haven't seen the first live action Movie, it's having a sequel.

Stop being so overdramatic with Sequels.

Cruella: Starring Emma Stone and written by Saving Mr. Banks scribe Kelly Marcel

Uh-oh. Trying to humanize a pure evil villain didn't go so well the first time, but I guess Disney wants to try it again.

Maleficent 2: Jolie will return for the sequel along with screenwriter Linda Woolverton

Speaking of which...

A Wrinkle in Time: Selma director Ava DuVernay is attached to direct, with Frozen screenwriter Jennifer Lee overseeing the script

Jungle Cruise: Starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms: Safe Haven's Lasse Hallstrom will direct, with Ashleigh Powell scripting

Never heard of these properties before. Although I hope The Rock carries his chops from Escape The Witch Mountain with him (of course, given the title, any chops whatsoever might not be applicable no matter how hard he tries, but all of that remains to be seen.)

Dumbo: Alice in Wonderland and Edward Scissorhands filmmaker Tim Burton will direct, with Transformers: Age of Extinction writer Ehren Kruger penning the screenplay

And time once again for Tim Burton to get his "Burton-ese" all over another classic film. I'm probably not going to like this.

A Marry Poppins sequel: Rob Marshall will direct Emily Blunt and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda

Considering the premise of MP is actually very versatile for sequels, this is an interesting idea. But of course, results may vary.

The Jungle Book 2: Director Jon Favreau and screenwriter Justin Marks are coming back for the sequel

The first just came out and there's already a sequel? That's normally not much of a good sign. But to be fair, I still haven't seen the live-action Jungle Book and the trailers did make it seem to be worth something, so once more, I'll reserve my judgement.

A Tinker Bell Project: Reese Witherspoon is set to star, with Finding Dory writer Victoria Strouse working on the film

I want to assume this doesn't have anything to do with the whole Tinker Bell fairy forest whats-it-ma-jigger thing that gets played on the Disney Channel all the time. If so, then please don't go the same route as Pan... although it probably will, will it? Oi.

Am I the only one who liked the Lion King sequel?

Nope, I liked it just because it's hilarious to rewind the scene when the antagonist dies (I forgot her name) and I liked Kovu. He was cool to me as a kid ^-^

As for the sequels... we all knew it was going to happen. But oh gawrsh... Tim Burton + Dumbo = A even scarier Pink Elephant Parade O-O. I refused to watch Dumbo as a kid just because of that scene and now it's probably going to be even scarier O-O

My youngest brother loved that part! He always was like, the other parts are so pretty. But we agreed that a cardboard cutout frame of a villain falling was funny, and something about her makes us bust a gut every time!

Well, looks like Disney's aiming to milk away at their existing properties into live action form! We'll see how that goes! X3

Am I the only one who liked the Lion King sequel?

Nope, you aren't the only one!  I loved Simba's Pride!  Definitely a great sequel! :3

The original Wrinkle in Time was pretty bad.... guess they can't make it worse.

And what the hell, Maleficent 2!? What's left? Everything was wrapped up in the first one!

Tim Burton, no! Don't direct a terrifying live action version of an already mind-f%$ky movie!

Wasn't there already some lower budget Mary Poppins sequel, based on the second book?

*Rant-mode warning. No offense if you actually liked the movie Maleficent. I have nothing against you, I just really REALLY don't like this movie. If you like it, that's fine, I just don't share the same opinion. My rant is purely just directed towards the decision of the movie itself, not the people who like it. If you are offended easily though, maybe it's safe to just look past my comment and look at other peoples' reactions.

Ok, these other ones I can kind of understand (actually not really, WHY, JUST WHY!?), but Maleficent 2?

Maleficent 2!?

FREAKING MALEFICENT 2!!??

NO

Just.... NO!

What the heck could you even do for a Maleficent 2!? You already screwed around with the original story, and not in a very creative way, or even in a good way for that matter! Where else is there to go with this story!? You can't honestly be telling me that this mess was popular enough for Disney to want to pick up a sequel to this? I mean, I know that there are a few thousand or so people out there that like this movie, despite how many problems it has. But is there seriously enough support for a continuation of something that in all fairness, probably needs a reboot of it's own!? Why not just do a retelling of the movie where Maleficent actually IS the villain? You know, how it's supposed to be done!? If you're going to go to all the effort of just making a new story, then why not just put that towards correcting your mistakes? But no, I guess for some stupid reason or another we'll be forced to see NOT-Maleficent continue her self-empowering journey of fighting off crazy men rulers and evil men-based forces of evil and just about anything men-based, because screw it all, let's just make Maleficent the symbol of female-empowerment instead of other female characters who were meant to be written as heroes and don't need their personalities completely twisted just to fit the ulterior motives of the movie! And let's NOT make her a villain at all, nooooooooooo, nobody wants to see her be badass or anything, we all want to see her as a righteous heroic figure (OOOOOOHHHHH better yet, let's make her either a martyr or a messiah, because THOSE haven't been done to death yet, right!?)! I mean villains are lame anyways, let's just keep changing all the beloved memorable characters that people liked in the original and make them either frustratingly stupid or just outright insane with no redeeming qualities whatsoever so that they can be the villains instead, that way Maleficent can be given clear passage to walk the higher road and be better than everybody! GOD I HATE THIS MOVIE, PLEASE DON'T MAKE ANOTHER ONE!!!

Phew, rant over. I'm sorry about that, I just......can't believe they're even considering this. I mean it's awful enough that now I have to loathe the idea of seeing Angelina Jolie as Maleficent again, when by all means that should be one of the greatest bits of news ever. Don't get me wrong, she did a good job as Maleficent...you know, when they let her actually be the REAL Maleficent, but that performance is just overshadowed by how messed up the story is that it doesn't make it easy for me to really appreciate it. And now I'm fairly certain that we won't be getting to see ANY moments of Jolie doing an evil Maleficent since she's supposed to be a "hero" now and the sequel is likely only going to keep furthering that.

Sigh, I have a feeling that this whole live-action remake cycle is going to end up becoming Disney's ironic sequel to the Disney Sequelitis cycle from the early 2000's. There were some decent sequels and even some great new films from that time, but there were also a lot of sequels that, at best, were underwhelming compared to their original counterparts, to the point where it felt redundant to try and make sequels to them. I mean, any idea done well can work great, but if they're just going to keep relying on pushing these in the hopes that purely just being a live-action/CG hybrid of a timeless classic will be enough to win audiences over, then they're essentially making the same mistakes as before. I don't know, maybe there's a chance for most of these to actually be successful, and dare I say it, good. But they're pushing so many of these that all at once that it's just going to make the idea kind of tiring pretty soon, especially if they start becoming critical failures like Maleficent.

Am I the only one who liked the Lion King sequel?

That was before The Little Mermaid 2, though, wasn't it?

The only, ONLY live action remake that was good, (was really good) was Jungle Book. With a sequel in the works, I now have to worry... It was fine the way it was, just end it there :/ As for the other remakes, haha, no.

Am I the only one who liked the Lion King sequel?

Your not the only one The Lion King sequel among all the other sequels is my favorite

Cruella: Starring Emma Stone

Why make a movie about a crazy woman who kills puppies for coats, and you're supposed to sympathize with her because of some kind of backstory just like that joke of Maleficent.

DISNEY YOU WILL NEVER GET ME TO SYMPATHIZE WITH A DOG KILLER, NEVER!

Bad move Disney

I couldn't agree more. That movie ruined Sleeping Beauty and it did not respect the source material. But the one I really blame for that movie is the awful screenwriter Linda Woolverton and her horrible storytelling if you've seen her work after Lion King you see what I mean.

I admit Jungle Book was a good live action treatment and if they treat their movies with respect to the source material then maybe these movies can be more than watchable.

I was expecting to see more original animated films announced but nope more live action treatments it is. Oh well at least you're not forced to watch it except if you're a big Disney fan you haft to always be reminded the live action movies exist by updates and public attention. Im just hoping for the day when the first paper man hybrid will be a full feature film will come before we reach a new decade.

It's just the fact that although live action treatments can be good to me they often brings me back too much to reality and I prefer a world that is less realistic cause It's always nice to have an escape from reality and let your inner child shine where there are no limits, and anything can happen.

You people realise A Wrinkle in Time was originally a book (and part of a series in itself), right?

Plus, you know, variety. I think Moana is like the only new animated movie (that isn't a sequel) that they have announced so far. I know a lot of work goes into these things, but shouldn't that mean that more effort is put into making more of those instead of trying to manufacture more live action stuff, it's practically all we're going to see for the next 10 years. :/

You people realise A Wrinkle in Time was originally a book (and part of a series in itself), right?

Oh I know that, I'm not giving too much one way or the other on that one. If it's good it's good. I mean, I remember loving the book and at least kind of liking the original movie (I mean, the actors for the kids were a little "eh"), so if they can do a good job with that, I'm down for it. Same with BFG, though I don't know if I'll actually see that one. I'm honestly almost a little more interested in the remakes they're doing from other people's properties that they haven't made movies of yet, at least this feels more new than the bajillion other Disney remakes we're getting all at once.

Am I the only one who loved Maleficent? I think it was a good movie on its own.

You certainly are not, like I said there are plenty of people out there who like this movie. My opinions about it are very VERY strong, but that shouldn't make you feel stupid for liking it. If anything you're seeing something about it that I can't, you're getting a different experience that I can never understand, and that's special. I just don't feel like it's worth it for me to discover that while acknowledging everything else I see in this movie, I just feel like the damage has already been done for me. :P

Oh, I loved Maleficent.  At first I thought it was going to be rather blah because I'm not a real big fan of Sleeping Beauty in general (especially *not* the original fairy tale, yikes).  I watched it with my siblings, though, and just adored it and have seen it several times over.  I think a sequel would be okay so long as it is done well.  If it's just a filler that ruins the first movie to make money I will be disappointed, but if it's a sequel done right that would actually be pretty cool.  I would at least give it a go and see what it's like.

After Moana they have Gigantic which loosely based on Jack & The Beanstalk and then probably Frozen 2 and after Frozen 2 sequels for the revival era will probably start. What I like that Disney is about to do however is that both Tangled & Big Hero 6 are getting a tv series instead of the mouse house rushing a sequel for them.

We will probably have 3 more announced live action treatments this year. Just like a week ago Disney announced a new Peter Pan live action treatment with a Loosely based Snow White's sister being announced on april 1st. I just hope they don't touch The Lion King or Tarzan next.

Cruella?! Uh-Oh!  :O Crazy lady of my childhood has her own movie. Oh lord!

BACKSTORY ABOUT HER! I'M CALLING IT! xD

I want to know what made her a crazy lady! LOL

"Disney representatives also later confirmed that there was still no room in their schedule to fit Tron 3 in. Then they seemingly began trying to stifle fits of laughter as they hurriedly left the scene."

Oh yeah the original tale... Bleh. I haven't really seen the original Sleeping Beauty movie either although I basically know the story. The spindle prick, etc. I'm excited to see a sequel. I'd love to see what happens to Maleficent and Aurora. Their relationship was adorable.

I applaud you. We need more people like you in the world. Just how you speak of your dislike towards something and acknowledge that it has a special connection to someone else. That it's not your cup of tea but it's okay for other people to like it. That's actually something I'm going through right now, where I'm actually called crazy for liking something that someone else doesn't. You're beautiful.

I'm not as savvy with Disney terminology as I probably would like to be, which era would be the Revival era again? Also is Gigantic animated, I don't know too much about it other than the title.

Is it customary for us to get a new live action version of Peter Pan every decade or so? I mean first Hook, then Finding Neverland, then Peter Pan, then Pan, and now an actual Disney remake of Peter Pan? How many times do I have to watch poor Hook get eaten alive by that crocodile, there's only so much a guy can take! -___-"""

Isn't a different company trying to make a live action Tarzan? Also considering the pattern so far, a Lion King remake is more than likely at this point. -_-"

I'm under the belief that everyone should be allowed to go crazy when it comes to expressing their opinions (at least for the fun of it), so long as they realize and acknowledge that it's just an opinion and that other people are allowed to see things differently and may have really good reason for doing so. I mean I would at least hope that a few people find my over the top reaction funny to watch, but at no point do I ever want to go as far as insult anyone, especially if they have little to nothing to do with what I'm talking about. You can blame something or the people who made it for being bad, but you can't blame other people for liking it anyway. Gotta wield the crazy blade in one hand with the rational blade in the other.

Yep Gigantic will be computer animated just like Zootopia.

Sadly I know that they are probably already thinking of giving that kind of treatment to TLK but I just wish it wouldn't happen >.> .

Yes I think it's Warner Bros. I mean I hope that Disney's take on Tarzan doesn't get the live action treatment the one that was made in 1999.
