GamesTM magazine interview with Tetsuya Nomura discusses Disney's role and the possibility of multiple playable characters in Kingdom Hearts III

In a recent interview with GamesTM magazine, Tetsuya Nomura, director of the Kingdom Hearts series, answered a few questions about Disney's influence on the series and the possibility of having multiple playable characters in Kingdom Hearts III. In short, Nomura claims that Disney has never stopped the Kingdom Hearts team from doing something they wanted to do. At most, they've suggested having a lighter tone or happier endings, but unique story elements of Kingdom Hearts were never disagreed upon by Disney.

The interviewer also mentions a theme to the numbered titles in the series, noting that Kingdom Hearts had one playable character and Kingdom Hearts II had two playable characters. The interviewer asks Nomura if the trend will continue with three playable characters in Kingdom Hearts III. The full interview can be read below:

-Disney is very franchise-oriented - we'll never see the "final" Mickey Mouse story - is there a pressure to keep Kingdom Hearts going forever?

Nomura: The discussion of the end of Kingdom Hearts has never come up between me and Disney, so I don’t know what their intentions are. But while creating Kingdom Hearts, with each generation I think to myself “This should be something that can’t be accomplished by just Disney”. It has to be something uniquely Kingdom Hearts. So it’s a matter of how long can I keep creating for Kingdom Hearts! I don’t know if the fans would enjoy it as much if it was just Disney, if it wasn’t a combination of Disney and my own creativity.

-Has there been anything that Disney has stopped you from doing?

Nomura: I don’t feel they inhibited anything. The Disney worlds that appear within our game are their franchise so they’re interested in maintaining those worlds. But anything unique to Kingdom Hearts hasn’t been a source of disagreement from Disney. Of course, sometimes when we’re writing the story then sometimes they ask us to give it a lighter tone or happier ending – but they haven’t stopped us from doing anything.

-What has skipping the PS3 era allowed you to do with this new iteration of the Kingdom Hearts systems?

Nomura: There wasn’t a specific intention to skip a generation other than Kingdom Hearts being on a console has a very high bar to reach. Fans who love the series would want something even greater than Kingdom Hearts II. Unfortunately, during that period I didn’t get the chance to start on a project that big and other key developers were working on other projects. We needed to get our experience and polish our skills at creating Kingdom Hearts games so that there was a proper preparation for a big title like Kingdom Hearts III. It just happened that this preparation took the life cycle of the PS3.

-Since you switched engines during development, what was that transition like? Did it take the team a long time to adapt to that new engine or was is relatively smooth?

Nomura: The transition was quite a process. We pretty much had to start from the ground again. We had to make sure that we could recreate our key effects in the Unreal Engine and that the effects we specifically needed for Kingdom Hearts could be adapted. We were also developing a Kingdom Hearts-specific shader and we had to make a lot of adjustments so we could use that shader on the new engine. That goes a long way to explaining the long distance between the announcement and now, when we’re able to reveal more information about the title.

-Are new battle systems based on modifications you wanted for the previous games but couldn't achieve on the previous hardware?

Nomura: I feel that going through the different spin-off titles and ideas for battle systems, how the gameplay there works, we kind of learned from that and implemented a new battle system as well as introducing new and unique moves. There’s also the Keyblade Transformation which is involved around the plot point where Sora has gone through a test of mastery so it makes sense story-wise that this transformation is part of his combat. There have been many bold additions to Kingdom Hearts III in combat and those are only possible because we have access to the better hardware but it hasn’t necessarily been things I couldn’t have done then. It’s more that I learned from the experiments of the spin-offs.

-In the first game there was one playable character, in the second there were two - will there be three in the third?

Nomura: It’s a secret but by saying that we imply that maybe something’s going on. We can’t disclose anything but, maybe, something will happen there.

His response, and the fact that Birth by Sleep 0.2 -A Fragmentary Passage- was originally in Kingdom Hearts III seem to hint that we may be controlling more than just Sora in Kingdom Hearts III! Do you want multiple playable characters in Kingdom Hearts III or do you just want to stick with Sora? If you do, who do you want to play as? Let us know in the comments!

We know it's not going to be multiple scenarios like BBS and 3D (and I wouldn't want them to do it that way, it kills the pacing of the game), so I'm willing to bet it's either the prologue, which I think is more likely to be playing as Young Xehanort than Kairi, or it's during the final battle. I hope the latter is definitely true. Sora can't just go and beat all of them himself when there's 7 guardians of light.

I really hope that we can visit every world three times but with different characters.1) Sora, Donald, Goofy [the heroes]2) Riku, Mickey (+ Aqua) [the masters]3) Lea, Kairi, (+ another group member, maybe a Disney character?) [the beginners]FF13 was good, where each group went their own path and crossed the ways in the end.

Probably Ventus as the last beginner.

till what ?

D23 Japan. I think it is November 4th, two days before D23, actually, when there will be an hour or hour and a half event dedicated to the Kingdom Hearts SERIES.

Well, that's one less day to worry about.

Nomura is usually pretty good at keeping a secret, but he pretty much confirmed multiple characters with that last statement.

I would like multiple playable characters, but it would have to be in the fashion of KH2 if it is going to feel like a true numbered KH game.  Maybe we play as one character for a little bit, but overall Sora should dominate the majority of the game.

Agreed. I enjoyed the Roxas segment in KH2 in my first playthrough. but after 100%-ing the game, it was like torture because I couldn't do much of the stuff I could when I was mlg pro Sora. imo, the tutorial shouldn't be limited by the character, but we should have a chance to get to tinker with attraction flow, flowmotion, all that jazz.

Yush Yush YUUUUUSSSSHHHH!!!!!!! MOAR CHARACTERS FOR KHIII!!! I mean, yes I want to play as Sora 75% of the time, but I would still love to have some major full-fledged fun with the other characters of the series too! I really hope that at the very least we get to play as 3 characters, if not more. And my first choices would be Sora, Riku, and Kairi, because god damn it I NEED to play as Kairi by this point, more girl power! X3 <3

Kairi, Riku and Sora must be playable before anyone else. Aqua's story was the original prologue so if they replace it then it will probably be with Eraqus. That's unless they pull a KH2 and give us a character we have no clue who they are.

I like the variation of play styles for each character we have played as in KH so far.  But, besides playing as Kairi, I would love to play as both Lea and Yen Sid at some point in the game.

I've seen this before on Tumblr. In fact, the one I saw had extra questions.

Link if anybody wants it:

For real though, I'd like to see a system of playable characters carrying over like in KH2. The series started with Sora, Riku, Kairi. It should end with us getting to play as all three of them.

The Saga* should end

we probably wont play as Sora after this anymore but it's not the end of the series.

Nomura said that Sora will still be the main character.

Nomura literally said that "Sora would always be the hero of the series". Sora isn't going anywhere. We'll probably get more new characters to play as, but Sora will forever be the Goku of KH. It's a really n00bish way of putting it, but it's also the truest.

I hope we get to play as Kairi for the tutorial and then Sora the remainder of the game and play as other characters in certain situations (like Mickey and Riku in KH2)

It would be great if you could take control of other party members in REAL TIME battle. Have the rest of the party go into AI mode.  Then the story wouldn't suffer from so many changing viewpoints like in DDD.  It sounds like a fluid combat system to me.

Well, well, this is interesting... here's my wishlist for playable characters for KH3.

Young Master Xehanort

King Mickey

Sora

Here's mine:

Sora

Ephemera

Kairi

n^(n-1) = number of playable characters where n is the number of the main game.

KHI: 1^(1-1) = 1^0 = 1 playable character

KHII: 2^(2-1) = 2^1 = 2 playable characters

KHIII: 3^(3-1) = 3^2 = 9 playable characters

I'd be fine with that as long as Sora gets more time than the others.

Good. Disney knows when to back off, creative wise. That's why they are now an empire compared to last decade when they were a joke

They were still an empire. A jokey empire.AND they are worse in a couple ways these days.

Yall seem to be forgetting that Nomura did announce Multiplayer. Just because multiple characters are playble doesn't specifically mean they have their own storyline.I do think it would be nice to experience each guardian of light's story. But not sure if I should get my hopes up.IIRC he said that we won't know who all the guardians are, and that Sora's story is tracking them down and then the final battle. That'll make me think that we play Sora up until the final battle then cycle through all the boss battles with the corresponding Guardian/Seeker.

End Note: I have a really bad memory and prolly just imagined all that.
