Why do some people hate other people's opinions?

Posted

I noticed this on social sites like this one and I wonder what's causing people to do this. In my opinion I think it's because some people fear other people's opinions. I do that sometimes and I know how it feels to see a person disagree with their opinion.

They're suffering Allodoxaphobia

They think that they're always right and everyone else is always wrong and even if they're wrong, they won't admit it.

Remember that the definition of fear is basically worrying about getting hurt  in the future or in the present either emotionally or physically. Maybe people act that way because they don't want to get hurt in the inside because of people's opinions.

Because if you care enough about something to have an opinion to begin with, a viewpoint countering that opinion can be taken as an attack against you.  Who wants to be told the thing they care about is a load of crap?

As a person who tends to come off as one of those people,I personally hate it when people think they can say any idiotic and stupid thing they want and get away with it by saying its JUST their opinion,an example would be an argument I had a friend about comic movie fandoms and how she thinks that IF YOU DONT READ THE COMICS YOU CAN NOT POSSIBLY BE A FAN OF THESE FRANCHISES,EVER!I proceeded to reply on how that thought process is stupid which she replied"Hey, its just my opinion."

I wont hate on your opinion if its actually smart and sound, even if it goes against my own,but if its stupid,Im gonna call them out on it and shed some perspective on them and hopefully enlighten them with the new found perspective they hopefully gotten.

But eh,just my opinion :P

I have to say that it's very annoying when people say idiotic things and only use "it's only my opinion" as their back up.That may work on simple opinions like why you like strawberries or the color blue but not when in a debate where reasoning is required.

During a debate, their opinion about the topic they were researching isn't really necessary because a debate is not opinion based, a debate is about the information you found to explain why this could be true and just like you said above reasoning is required.

I always take this thing a little like this.

Lets say we are talking about a movie, and I ask you if you liked it.You then say no,I didnt like it at all.

That is completely fine, but what if I then asked further, what if I then asked if it was a bad or good movie?

You then say yes,it was completely awful.

I then replying by saying"But it was critically acclaimed, won several rewards, are you really saying there is absolutely no quality to be found here?"

"Nope,none."

I then ask why.

"It was just shit man."

"But...that cant be,you cant just say its shit, without any kind of logical reason."

"Hey,its JUST MY OPINION."

I would then end the conversation there.

Im fine if someone personally likes or dislikes something, but once we talk about something like a films actual quality,I demand logic behind ones own thoughts on whether somethings good or bad,and it better be damn good logic at that.

Simple and clean my friend. People hate other people's opinions because no one in the world will ever think the same as you. That's the way of the world. :P

Exactly. If you give some reasoning behind why you feel the way you do it's makes more sense and has more intelligence behind it then just saying 'it's just my opinion".

In some debates where you are discussing opinions it's better to back up WHY you have such an opinion or it just sounds unintelligent and lame. And people DO debate opinions all the time in conversations . This is what i'm referring to.

Opinions are the epitome of controversies. Many despise the idea alone of having their perspectives shattered by a different persons. Here's an opinion of mine that I said on Youtube that is currently holding a heated debate with two other people: "There is no good or evil, no right or wrong, no black and white. There is only perspective."

If thats the case we would hate everyone for not having the same thought process ,there is common ground to be found,if that wasnt the case, youd be sitting here hating every living being cause they didnt like that new Disney movie the way you did.

Haha, I didn't mean it in that regard, I meant for the opinions where no common ground can be found. :)

Maybe we have to accept that we can't change how people think about certain subjects.

Maybe we have to accept that we can't change how people think about certain subjects.

But what are the chances in that happening. There will always be conflict on all topics in existence; people will always be attempting to shove their perspectives down others thraots. Some even succeeding.

Maybe you need to accept that histories past will show plenty of cases where it shows the opposite happen,I have had arguments with way too many people and have seen many perspectives change, including my own,so the thought of that I just cant fathom.

This is what government is all about.

I know how you feel.

Look at the Bleach fanbase (if you read Bleach) if you like IchiRuki (Ichigo x Rukia) then the IchiHime fans (Ichigo x Orihime) attack and vice vertsa truth is i love IchiRuki but i'm ok with IchiHime.

I see this as two separate issues actually. I would say in general, people don't hate other people's opinions. For instance, I don't like Twilight. In a debate, I would have a strong argument against liking Twilight. But in the end, it's just an opinion versus an opinion. While I'd be annoyed that someone actually liked Twilight, it's not my place to hate them for it. Everyone likes and thinks different things. I think most people just strongly disagree (which can be mistaken for hatred) in most cases.

Now when we're talking actual /hatred/, although that's a rather strong word, I think we've moved out of the realm of opinions. When it comes to basic human rights? I definitely hate the ""opinions"" of people who oppose them. I put opinions in quotation marks because deciding whether or not someone else deserves basic human rights is not a place where an ""opinion"" belongs - they are rights all humans inherently deserve. I feel the same way with the evolution/creationism debate. If someone believes in creationism then that's fine, if that's what makes them happy. That's their opinion and they are perfectly entitled to it. I hate the ""opinions"" of those who want to force prayer and the teaching of creationism in schools, because it's essentially brainwashing children into becoming Christians. At this point, yes, I do hate the opinions of the people saying them. However, when people's lives and learning are at stake, I think it's often okay to hate the opinions of people trying to perpetuate issues in society. (But let me make a strong distinction here: the opinions of people saying such things are okay to hate - it is not okay, at least to me, to hate the people who harbor them.)
