Yasue talks HD 2.5 ReMIX dev, possibilities of other platforms / 3D HD / future titles, KH3 world selection & more

RPG Site have conducted an interview with the co-director of the Kingdom Hearts series, Tai Yasue, to discuss Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX following its appearance at E3 2014. Here, Yasue talks about the development of the game, hints at possibilities for inclusions in Kingdom Hearts III and more. You can read the full interview at RPG Site, or check out our summary below.

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX

- Kingdom Hearts 3D [Dream Drop Distance] was not included in this collection, since the game released very recently (within the last 2 years), and thus only Birth by Sleep and Re:coded were considered for inclusion. There are no plans for a HD release of Kingdom Hearts 3D and they haven't decided anything, but it is on the table-- and might "perhaps" be considered later for "something like" a downloadable title.

- The Re:coded cutscenes are 3 hours long, with 2 hours being "totally new". This will explain some more back story to other Kingdom Hearts titles.

- Many things were considered for inclusion in the HD collection, but ended up being decided against so as to not delay Kingdom Hearts III even further (since the same team is making KH3 & KH2.5). These things were-- making Re:coded into a full game, multiplayer in Mirage Arena (which is now single player, with a challenge system where you can accrue bonuses, better balance, and updated boss AI), and lastly, capes in Birth by Sleep (which would have required costly and difficult animations). To be clear, all of this was decided against in order to focus more on Kingdom Hearts III.

- 70-80 people worked on HD 2.5 ReMIX, including around 35 people working on cutscenes, 5 programmers, and an unknown amount of designers, sound staff and more.

- There's a possibility that the HD collections will be considered for the PlayStation Vita, but the initial focus was concentrating on the PlayStation 3-- later, they will look at considerations for other platforms and evaluate the markets and schedules.

- Regarding a collector's edition for HD 2.5 ReMIX in the West, they are looking into what they can do, but nothing has been finalized yet.

Kingdom Hearts III

- When asked about the possibility of Star Wars and Marvel based worlds, Yasue said "Star Wars and Marvel is great, but I of course can't make any announcements at all!"

- Later, Yasue brought up the movie Frozen after being asked about the world selection process-- "On a personal level... I would really like Frozen. The snow, ice formations and story are very magical, the music too of course. I saw it with my daughter and it was very enjoyable."

- There is "always the possibility" of releasing another Kingdom Hearts title before Kingdom Hearts III. They are "taking into consideration a lot of different titles", but nothing has been decided on yet.

I just hope the Star Wars and Marvel stuff dies down. I love both, but they have nothing to do with Kingdom Hearts for me.

They consider EVERYTHING.

Everything gets considered before making a final decision, by everyone.

I honestly don't know what to think anymore, and this "little" interview scares me. We went from having definitive answers to everything being tossed in the air.It used to be that KH3D was not going to have a HD port or anything, but now it's suddenly something that might "perhaps" occur "something like" a downloadable title? Oh and don't worry KH fans, after any and all HD remixes, KH3 is the next new game..... unless we make another "side story", which is "always possible".Sigh. Always possible? ALWAYS POSSIBLE!?!? No, how is any of this possible at all? There was such a clear path for what was coming, now nothing is certain. After a decade of throwing the KH games all over the platform dart board, collecting them all on one console was a GREAT idea to get people ready for KH3. Even if they made a new game, what are the odds it would e on the PS3? Practically none. Unless they've been working on it for a while and it comes out next year.I don't know what it is about Japanese developers being vague during interviews, but it's doing more harm than good.

Please take consideration for putting the HD remix on the xbox 360. It's not fair to put kingdom hearts 3 on the ps4 and xbox1 and then to only put the 1.5 and 2.5 on the PS3. Some gamers don't get the chance to play and understand the whole amazing story of Kingdom Hearts and would love to if you gave them a chance for Xbox users. And finally, you would make more profit if you do. So I hope you take the consideration of putting the 1.5 and 2.5 on the 360 and other platforms as well, please and thank you and have a good day.

Won't happen. Square Enix don't release their HD collections for Xbox 360 because they'd sell like absolute shit. Buy a Sony platform or just miss out.

Lol. Calm down. Square Enix simply consider everything. And no, it wouldn't be on PlayStation 3.

I will say, even if we only got the HD collections on the Vita, that's enough reason for me to get a PS4/Vita bundle. It could technically be played on the PS4 then :P but also, it'd be nice to have Kingdom Hearts portable. Though home consoles with a tv and controller are still amazingly nice, I love being able to lay in bed and play portable game systems.

PlayStation Now will do that and more.

.....Well, at least I got a reason why they didn't put the capes in BbS......at the very least I have closure.... T.T

I would have rather KH3 be delayed and experienced online multiplayer with fans around the world. Even at that I would have been very happy to be able to play co-op with my friends in person. That really disappointed me that they weren't including even local co-op like the original had. I hope we (EU) get a collectors edition too, it's standard for NA to, but we're just passed over a lot here. I thought it would be neat to get little replicas of the in game trophies you see from BBS.

Bla bla bla...they will look at considerations for other platforms...

Bla bla bla...they are looking into what they can do, but nothing has been finalized yet.
For the sake of god one fully known
sentence in an interview! They keep repeating the same informations over and over but when it comes on what we really need to know from an interview: We are not considering "yet"---> the yet was used to burn the fans of waiting.

Square Enix didn't consider that many needed Disney worlds should appear instead of repeating the same worlds, but they consider Marvel and Star Wars, what an amazing thinking SE.

Bravo Square Enix, you rush on making the HD ReMIXes (which are the most important titles) and keep canceling many awesome things that should've been on the HD like: playing Days and Re:Coded as full games and Multiplayer Mirage Arena just to focus on KHIII and now when you had a little bit time for more focusing on KHIIIThere is "always the possibility" of releasing another Kingdom Hearts title before Kingdom Hearts III..... But hey Square Enix! Why did you cancel the multiplayer again? SE: Because we are in a pressure and we need to focus on KHIII.

I can admit that Schizophrenia is the only thing I've noticed from the latest interviews.

I must say that this is the best commentary I've ever read in my life (no irony.) This is it.

Making 358/2 Days and Re:coded playable would require a full remake which would take the time it took to make them originally. And then they wouldn't be able to release them on PS3. And who remakes a game for DS and then remakes it three years later for consoles? Lol.

Ahm... Resident Evil Revelations means something? Also, Days is already 5 years old, Coded is even older (not Re:coded), they could've remade both games for PS3/Wii U/wtv console they wanted instead of doing a NEW WHOLE game. And... yes, they would be able to release them to PS3. Chain of Memories is the main proof of that.

Ummm. That's a 3DS game that would only require a remaster. SE don't have time to remake those games, especially one that's already been remade. And no, they wouldn't have released them on PS3, because the PS3 could have been dead by the time it was finished. And then do you want to risk them being exclusive to Japan because of that? I think not.

Who makes a game for the Gameboy Advance and remakes it five years later for Playstation 2? Lol.

What's your point? Completely different situation. Back then everyone thought the KH team would develop KH3, instead they're still developing FFXV.

The point is that this team cannot hold the "pressure" of making these games in "time". I mean, seriously. They shouldn't have been THINKING of doing another game before KH3. It's just nonsense

and you think that making another titles before KHIII wouldn't be a way of increasing the time pressure? If we all just thought of it, most of the titles that we had already are enough for going through KHIII's story, which means that any other new title that might appear before KHIII won't be that important and it will never be as important as Coded and Days, that's why these two got their priority even if they made a whole remake for them on the two ReMIXes and remaking is not a first experience for SE and COM is enough to show the truth of that.

Not different at all. In fact, the PS3 still has several good years left on it. At the very least, they would stop making games for it within 2 years, 3 tops. Besides, things are in consideration right now. I say it's fair game for speculation until they start giving some straight facts.
