    Shadow may be a villain, which would explain his lack of scarf or sports tape. Eggman, for example, has a much fancier outfit compared to the heroes and NPCs, who all seem pretty rugged.

    SAO and Accel World are the only anime based off of light novels that I read, so I wouldn't know. Most I watch came from manga.
