Can someone explain how exactly overhype kills something? Like, am I supposed to complain if a thing I enjoy gets shared with many other people, or if something I don't care about nonetheless makes others happy? Because the more I hear complaints about something being "overrated," the less I understand the reasoning behind it.
Dave repliedI think a lot of it has to do with people desperately trying to distinguish themselves from "the norm." We've developed this mentality that we have to constantly distinguish ourselves as unique, and so if a bunch of people like something, then there's almost an obligation to act as though you're too cool for school, if only to satisfy some base sense of self image.
Dracozombie repliedI'm starting to think there really is some special snowflake mentality that goes behind getting annoyed at overexposure. Overhype just means there will be more people I get to talk to about something I care about. If not, it just becomes background noise. So Is see another Frozen poster. Mmkay, and?

HeyMouseSayCheese repliedWell overhype and overrated are really different animals altogether, but the idea is that once something starts getting more popular, you get a lot of people jumping on the bandwagon just because it's a new fad and that tends to annoy people who have been legitimate fans for a long time. The "legit" fans can certainly take it too personal and alienate any actual new fans though, and that does sadly happen a lot.

Frozen marketing has mainly become background noise to me, to the point where I don't think my brain even links all that merchandise with the film itself. I'd say not all the merchandise in the world can kill something's heart if you legitimately enjoyed it.

It's just annoying hearing people not shut up about something and try to shove it down my throat, especially if it's something I don't care for in the first place. "OH YOU NEED TO WATCH ATTACK ON TITAN" "YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT IT WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU" stuff like that. It just gets frustrating. Really frustrating.

Dracozombie repliedWell, then, those are internet babies that are quite easy to tune out when you get the hang of it (and if it's as big a problem as you say, theoretically you should have plenty of practice by now). I like what I like and dislike what I dislike. If what I like happens to be shared by many people, awesome. If something I dislike (or am apathetic towards) is widely spread, welp, that's more noise to tune out. If it's harmless and makes a lot of people happy, then whatever.

On the flip side, you don't have to feel like you're just caving if give it a shot and wind up liking it. But one thing that might help to make it the annoyance more tolerable is that they're only sharing it with you because they think you'll have fun with it.

Dracozombie repliedOne way to offset fanboy hoards is to just say it looks interesting, but that kind of show isn't your thing. You'll demonstrate it's a matter of personal taste over an assessment of the show (stupid as it is, many people DO have a kneejerk reaction to someone else not liking something as an issue with their own tastes). Keep repeating it until they get bored and move on to a new target. Or just use internet baseball bats.

They go hand in hand, sure, but to me they're not one and the same. That's why it doesn't make sense to me to call something "overrated" just because a lot of people like it. EVERYTHING that's popular will have someone call it "overrated" because a lot of people like something they don't.

Still, even before I did, my response to a disappointment was "I was disappointed," not "that was overrated." They both pretty much mean the same thing, but they're framed differently. One focuses on your own personal experiences, and the other is a judgment of the movie itself. After all, for too many people it clearly WASN'T overrated. So who's right?

Still, I wouldn't want something I love considered undeserving of its popularity, so I try not to judge other works the same way. (Keyword there is TRY.
