Kingdom Hearts series director Tetsuya Nomura recently spoke with the IGN staff about Kingdom Hearts III at D23 Expo 2017. While discussing the possibility of Kingdom Hearts III on Nintendo Switch and the rest of the series to go on Xbox, Nomura also discussed if there will be more playable characters in the future. Nomura says that it would be tough to introduce many playable characters, but he intends to have another playable character aside from Sora.

"So it would be tough to introduce many, multiple playable characters, but there is an intention of adding a playable character aside from Sora. Unfortunately we’re not able to disclose who it is yet, but there will be [another playable character]."

Furthermore, Nomura discusses the reasoning behind multiple party members at once, confirming that this will be the replacement of D-Link from Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. You can check out the quote below.

 

"D-Link, that has been done away with. It was actually a compromise in a previous iteration because we were not able to display multiple characters on that platform in that game. We’re able to depict multiple characters. Up to five people can join, even more, multiple characters can join your party."

It's Kairi because she needs some serious character development. And I'm almost certain love (between Sora and Kairi) will be a big theme in KH3.

Either Riku or Aqua. I'm pretty sure is Aqua but maybe it's Kairi but only in the tutorial part of the game.

Probably Riku, Kairi (God I hope so) or, less likely, Lea.

 

Also having even more party members pretty much confirms everyone will be fighting alongside you in the Keyblade Graveyard.

It has to be Riku. I don't see who else would be added aside from maybe Kairi (or Aqua since they already have her moveset made).

Awesome news! I'm guessing it will be Riku, but I could also see Lea or Kairi being playable. Still, my munny is on Riku.

I really hope it's not just one playable character, because as much as I want it to be Riku, I also want to play Kairi too. It shouldn't be asking that much to ask for two additional playable characters other than Sora, we've seen that done before in BBS, it's not impossible. Please Nomura, let us play the as the complete islander trio!

I hope to God it's Kairi (although plot-wise, it might make more sense to be Riku).

 

If it isn't her, however, than I hope they can at least give her a prominent role - maybe make her and Lea party members on certain worlds, especially ones where there wouldn't be any sensible choices for guest party members.

Bet all my munny that it's Riku... Again.

 

But I hope they pull a KH2 with Roxas... Maybe Kairi, since she's the only other light that wasn't playable. Ever.

I'd like to play as Kairi, Young Xehanort or Young Eraqus.

I don't need many playable Characters. I just want to play my boi Riku!

You know if 0.2 was in KH3 before it was removed due to the increased content this answer would have fully meant Aqua. Still could, but Rob thinks Riku.
 
Would love a future Sora x Aqua playable tag team in KH3.

So, there is indeed the possibility of at least one more playable character in the game aside from Sora, huh? That's awesome! I think that it'll most likely be Riku, since Sora and Riku are heading off on their separate journeys! And if it's not Riku, then who could it be? It'll be interesting to find that out as more info rolls along!

 

And also, about the multiple party members replacing D-Links, I think that's frickin awesome! The simple fact that one can have up to five or more people fighting onscreen against waves of Heartless and Nobodies just makes me tingle with excitement!

I wanted it to be Riku because I've played as him in KH3D. So I could have him playable in KH3 because he's going with King Mickey to any Disney worlds and search for Aqua in the realm of darkness.

Would really prefer to just play as Sora in KH3, but I suppose that's no longer the case.

Nomura already said up to five, which is plenty of party members on screen already. Unless you're talking switchable like in KH2 & 1, which I doubt they will have more than seven (PS4 and Xbox One still have limitations.)

No, he said five or more. Meaning he is hinting that the party would have members of at least more than 5.
